Entry for January 31, 2008 How not to seal granite
photo

I cleared the kids out, planned a Murphy's pizza dinner and then got to work.  Unfortunately, I didn't quite get it when the container said to leave the seal on for 3-5 minutes then remove any excet residue.  I figured if I was careful and didn't leave puddles I could skip the removal step.  Just so  you know, it's not supposed to stay on like a wax.  :)  You wipe it off and the THIN film is what protects against stains.

Hours later, I was left with a smeared mess mostly behind the sink where the granite pushes out to the bay window.  I had visions of scrubbing it all off with steel wool.  (The finest kind does a great job on granite but make sure its the 0000 size or it will scratch.)  But last night I tried a granite cleaner that is meant to be used like any other spray on/wipe off cleaner.  It loosened the thick seal I had applied and with a little wiping with the stell wool and a clean clother,  Viola!  It's seals and looks good.

I left the thicker seal on the beveled edges since I like the extra shine and the slight stickiness won't be a bother.

So, there you have it.  That's how not to seal granite but has a happy ending that didn't take long at all to the arrive at.

Hugs,

Auntie M
