Design Philosophy

Those of you who saw my previous design notice that this new site is a departure in design. Instead of demonstrating "cutting edge" JavaScript trickery, this interface is much cleaner, and easier to navigate.

It's also designed to be backwards compatible with old browsers. I've tested it so far with Cyberdog 2.0, Netscape 3, and iCab 2.1. All for Macintosh. Tests done off-line and does not reflect results using Geocities hosting.

  • navigation - I was talking to an artist who told me that the venerable Yahoo! interface isn't intuitive nor is it easy to navigate. Reflecting upon it, I realized that it's true -- with the advent of portals, the site is very "busy." I designed the simple double line navigation bar for my Next Generation JavaScript site, and revised it to reflect the site's needs.
  • colors - the previous site was this nice, pastel blue. I don't remember where I found it, but I thought "hey, wow, nice blue." And I became a slave to it. Then I thought maybe a dark blue or green... But I realized that I can't see blue or green on a one bit display, so I decided to go even more minimal: black and white. The icons are colored to add a splash of spice.
  • font - although I am told serifs are easy to read, I decided to use a default Macintosh font (Geneva). The closest Windows font is Arial. To aid in readability, the font is large. It also makes me feel like I don't have to write a lot and fill space.
