The History of Sam the Butcher

Bloodbar!

How Sam the Butcher Came To Be:

At first, there was nothing. Then, a primeval mist arose that gave birth to Curt, the fresh water entity, and Shayne, the salt water entity. They combined powers to form the heavens and the Earth. Although failing miserably at their first creation, Curt and Shayne were not discouraged. In 1989, they tried again, this time with lyrics and two guitars. Sam the Butcher was born!
After four years of colaboration, Curt and Shayne had some presentable material. At this time, 1993, bassist Brent Blackwell joined the band. Times were tough back then, since Curt and Shayne couldn't find a drummer. Then, in 1994, the group discovered Donnie Murphy. Curt asked Donnie if he could play drums for Sam the Butcher, and Donnie said he would learn. And he's still learning. So he picked up some second-rate drums and the band was complete.
In 1996, Brent was replaced by former Vampyre bassist Joe Wade. There are many rumors about the disappearance of Brent, the most famous one being that Joe ate his liver, then sacrificed him to Tiamat.
This line-up of Curt, Shayne, Donnie, and Joe has held strong. And in their wake they have infected cities ranging from Francesville to West Lafayette with their mania and delusions of grandeur. See the Medical Journal in the Picture Index for more information.

But Curt, why the name Sam the Butcher?

Curt: "Sam the Butcher's name is inspired by the butcher of the same name from The Brady Bunch. The name was sugested to me three years ago by the legendary Dwight Snethens."

And now, the band discloses their music-making process!

Take half cup softened butter, quarter cup brown sugar, half cup plain sugar, two and a half cups flour, one chicken egg, half teaspoon baking soda, quarter teaspoon salt, half teaspoon vanilla, random pieces of meat. Mix well, spread out on a 9"X 13" pan and bake at 375 degrees for half and hour.

And of course, the hometown scene supplies it's own influence.

Curt: "After watching the horrible cover bands of the Roof Garden Lounge [at Indiana Beach], we decided Monticello needed shocked back into reality."

Joe: "We wanted to kill the bands at the Roof!"

Ok, umm...Anything else you'd like to add?

Curt: "Yeah. Here are some good reasons why you should listen to Sam the Butcher:
