... Thea and I went to Mount Charleston and spotted 5-6 Steller's Jay's at the volunteer fire department
and 7 or 8 Western Bluebird's at Lee Canyon.
Both at the beginnng of the snow. 5000 feet?
On the way back we stopped at the National Wildlife Range ~ ie. Corn Creek 1.5 million acres.
We saw lots of birds:
- Mallard ~ 1 female
- Pied-billed Grebe ~ 1 immature
- Coot ~ 3
- Red-shouldered Hawk ~ 2 ~ I think we saw a yearling.
- Nortern Flicker ~ 1
- Raven ~ 5
- Phainopepla ~ 2 females
- Robin ~ 3
- Loggerhead Shrike ~ 1 but he sat about 10 feet from us for 5 minutes.
- Dark-eyed Junco ~ 15-18
- Sparrows ~ 3 maybe 4 different types:
- House
- White-crowned
- Sage
- Song
- Black-throated
- and we saw an Owl
what kind I would really like to know
because I got a good look at it and can not find one that looks like it.
A small Owl the size of a large pigeon.
We want to call it a Northern Saw-whet Owl
but it had a brown back, white body, gray wings,
and black tail. It was sitting.
An Owl face -no ears- black eyes ~ white face ~ black glasses.
Absolutely no spots...it was not very young either.
Got any ideas ??????
