President Obasanjo Okays Sovereign National Conference
In a surprised change of position, President Obasanjo, Tuesday, June 25, shifted from his earlier stance and expressed support for a sovereign national conference to straighten out all
contentious issues in the country.
He made the dramatic change in Abuja when he played host to a delegation of the youth council of Ohanaeze, the pan-Igbo socio-political group, in the Presidential Villa.
According to the President, a national conference to look at how Nigeria can be more effective, efficient, generate more sense of belonging and more stake in the Nigerian enterprise would
be most welcome.
Nigeria needs a whole-sale arrangement for stability, unity and harmony that makes all of you have stake in the enterprise called Nigeria.
Obasanjo, who had repeatedly opposed the demands for the convening of a national conference in the past, stressed that he had nothing to fear or worry
concerning the national conference whether sovereign or otherwise.
He however added that convening a national conference of all nationalities was a constitutional issue that could only be handled by the National Assembly.
