South-South Politicians Vow to Produce Next President

A bi-partisan grouping of top politicians from the South East and South-South zones of the country have gathered in Abuja to plan on how to ensure a successful campaign to producing the next president of Nigeria.  They vowed to expunge politicians from the zones who are in support of candidates from other geo-political zones for the 2003 presidential elections.

They also set up a joint action committee to work towards the realization of the common goal.  Former Governor of Edo State, Chief John Oyegun is to head the 16-member committee.

President Obasanjo Okays Sovereign National Conference

In a surprised change of position, President Obasanjo, Tuesday, June 25, shifted from his earlier stance and expressed support for a sovereign national conference to straighten out all contentious issues in the country.  He made the dramatic change in Abuja when he played host to a delegation of the youth council of Ohanaeze, the pan-Igbo socio-political group, in the Presidential Villa.

According to the President, a national conference to look at how Nigeria can be more effective, efficient, generate more sense of belonging and more stake in the Nigerian enterprise would be most welcome.  Nigeria needs a whole-sale arrangement for stability, unity and harmony that makes all of you have stake in the enterprise called Nigeria.

Obasanjo, who had repeatedly opposed the demands for the convening of a national conference in the past, stressed that he had nothing to fear or worry concerning the national conference whether sovereign or otherwise.  He however added that convening a national conference of all nationalities was a constitutional issue that could only be handled by the National Assembly.
