Neon Genesis Evangelion: Forget The Past Inside Evangelion Unit 04 "This really sucks." muttered Tohji, staring down at his arms. Outside Ritsuko and Katsuragi were diligentlypreparing for the tests. Tohji yawned and tried to stretch, but the entry plug wastoo cramped. "Misato-san, could we get this over with soon?" Misato, on the viewscreen, smiled at him. "Sorry about this Tohji-kun, it will only be a few minutes until we can get underway . . . afterwords, maybe I can treat you to dinner." "Awww man, I'm gonna be here until dinnertime?" Misato looked somewhat nervous and shrugged. "nothing I cando." "If I get to go to dinner with you Misato-san, it will all have been worth it." he winked. "You're as bad as Kaji." Misato whinced, then smiledagain and dissapeared. Tohji was jolted awake. He was hanging off the back of a train, the sun setting, turning everything dreamlike shades of red and orange. Inside the car, Rei Ayanami and ShinjiIkari were arguing. "He doesn't understand me.""Have you tried to understand him?" Tohji entered and they both turned to stare at him. "Hi Tohji!" said Shinji.Rei said nothing, as usual. "Hey Shinji . . ." Tohji responded, looking about bewildered and sitting down next to Rei. "Do you have anyidea how we got here?" "We have always been here, but never were here." said Rei. "Oh wow, of course . . . everything makes sense now." saidTohji sarcastically. "You should know by now, life doesn't make sense." said Shinji, rising from his seat, and walking over to where Reiwas. Impossibly, Shinji merged into Rei and a pale albino boy with grey hair now sat where Shinji and Rei had been amoment before. Tohji was not surprised by this and simply said, "Hey, how'sit going?" Kaworu smiled slightly. "Well, I can't complain." They sat for a few moments in companionable silence, until Tohji said: "You're an angel, huh?" "Yep." said Kaworu, staring out the opposing window at the sun setting. "We'll have to become one so I can takeover your Eva." "Hmmm." said Tohji. "Thanks anyways, but I'm not intothat sort of thing." The angel nodded understandingly. "That's okay, I can take on a different form. I believe Tabris wanted thisshape for later use." Kaworu dissapeared and Hikari appeared in his place. "Show me your compassionate side, Suzuhara-kun." "C'mon, she'd never say that." Tohji inched away slightly. "Hey, I'm doing my best - you're brain is harder to read then I thought it would be." complained Hikari. "Sorry to put you out. Look, we could just forget about this whole thing . . ." Hikari shrugged. "Sorry, I've got my orders. Don't bedifficult." "Didn't you know, difficult is my specialty!" Tohji slugged Hikari, and bolted out of the car. There was nothing beyond the end of the train car. Above and beneath him only sky. Hikari was coming after him. Tohji jumped into nothingness. "How typical." muttered Tohji as he ran into a classroom. Sitting around a few desks, Kensuke, Hikari and Asuka were eating lunch. Regarding Hikari carefully, Tohji recognized her as merely a figment of his mind. Relieved, he asked Kensuke if he'd seen Shinji or Ayanami around. "I think they have work today. It's rather weird that they don't need Asuka too . . . shouldn't you be at NERV?" he turned his attention to Asuka. Asuka nodded and finished her rice ball. "I have business to take care of first." she stared at Tohji. "Oh Shit!" cried Tohji, turning on his heels and heading for thedoor. He ran through a basketball court. He ran through a shopping centre and a hospital. Nowhere was safe, the angel was everywhere. Tohji finally found himself infront of a rundown apartment building. "Good enough." He was in Ayanami's apartment. "This place is so decrepit." he mumbled, glancing at some bloody bandages beside some cracked spectacles on a dresser. "But at least no one ishere." He sat down on the bed and started to shiver. "Geez, don't they have any heating in this place?" Suddenly, he heard a click. A door opened. Asuka appeared, wrapped in a towel, as if she had just been taking a shower. "Enough running forth child." she said. "Get away! Damn it . . . If you even think . . ." "Don't you realize fourth child? There's nothing you canfight. Give up." "I won't!""Idiot. There's no point to resistance. There's no point to anything."Any screams that may of been heard were drowned out by an enoumous explosion. "I don't want to fight Shinji." said Tohji as he unconciously moved Eva 04 into pursuit. "Tough luck, stupid." said Asuka, inside his head. Tohji could see what was happening, but could do nothing to prevent in. Being held in limbo between Angels and Evas, he could feel the pain of the other Evas. He heard and felt Asuka (the original) scream as Eva 04easily defeated her. "She didn't seem to be too worried about killing me." he muttered under his breath."Of course, she hates you." said the Angel. "Nice. Real nice." fumed Tohji. He was comforted somwhat by the fact that Rei had qualms over killing him, but wished that she had taken the opportunity. Because he knew what was coming next. "I can't kill another human being!" cried Shinji to hisfather in anguish. "Shinji . . . Put me out of my misery. It's alright. I'd rather you kill me. I've tried to fight it but I can't. Kill me. Or you're gonna die, and I don't think I could live with it. DO IT!" Tohji knew Shinji couldn't hear, but there was nothing to do except sit and wait for theinevitable. Tohji didn't even mind when his arm and leg were ripped a way from him. As he bled, the angel's possession of his mind faded. All he could do, even all he wanted to do, was lie there bleeding and crying. He would welcome death when it came. But it didn't. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Human Istrumentality Project:In the case of Tohji Suzuhara: In losing an arm and leg, Suzuhara also lost all of his former hostility. In his mind, he has resolved to accept whatever life offers. He has become resigned to his fate, whatever that may be. Tohji, alone, sitting on a chair in a spotlight. He is humming "losing my religion", when someone asks: "What do you hope to accomplish in the future?""I don't know." "Do you care what happens to you?" asked Shinji, appearing behind him, also in spotlight."No." "Do you care what happens to your sister and yourfriends?""I guess." "You used to be more concerned?" asked Kensuke, who also appeared in spotlight. "Maybe. Yeah. I used to have a cause. I used to want to protect the people I care about." "You've lost your cause?" queried Shinji. "Yes. And I . . . don't . . . care. It doesn't matter" "Why doesn't it matter?" asked Asuka, replacingKensuke. "Leave me alone." "There has to be a reason why nothing matters. Why doesn't it matter, Fourth Child?" "You should know!" he screamed back at her."Why?" "Because you're alone, just like me." "I'M just like YOU?" said Asuka, indignantly. "Yes! Nobody cares about us!" "I care." said Shinji. "I care." said Hikari, replacing Asuka. "It's not enough! You don't really know me or understandme!" "If it doesn't matter then why are you so upset?" saidShinji. "Shut up. I'm becoming as screwed up in the head as you, Shinji." moaned Tohji, holding his head in hisremaining hand. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Future (Maybe . . . or it could be twenty minutes ago- can't be sure with Evangelion): Asuka and Shinji were walking. It didn't matter where they were walking, but for the sake of plot, let us say they were walking through a deserted city. They were older, but thatis also irrelevant. The city wasn't truly deserted, for in their eccentric state, Asuka and Shinji thought they could see the ghosts of all the people they'd ever known. "Hikari!" cried Asuka as the shadow of a girl passed. Hikari turned around and smiled at her. "I'm waiting forsomeone." As Shinji and Asuka waited with Hikari, they saw more shadows. Shigeru Aoba and Maya Ibuki were carrying their laundry to some laudrymat somewhere in the stars. They waved. More familiar faces from NERV and school greeted them and continued on their prospective journeys. Rei smiled brightly at Shinji from where she stood with Gendo and Yui. "Father! Mother! Rei!" They smiled back at him, as if all the horror of the past was nonexistent. They then faded away. Misato and Kaji appeared soon after. "Shinji-kun!" scolded Misato "What exactly . . ."Shinji cut her off. "It doesn't matter Misato-san." Ritsuko appeared, carrying Pen-Pen. "I believe you lost this." she handed Pen-Pen to Misato. Misato grinned, hereyes glistening. "I guess . . . Everyone deserves a happy ending." "Take care of my mellons."(eh heh heh) said Kaji. "Behaveyourself Asuka." Asuka, for once, said nothing. She just smiled. Hikari was still patiently waiting beside them. "Who are we waiting for?" queried Asuka. "Tohji and Kensuke." she replied, getting a dreamy lookin her eyes. "Oh joy, the other two stooges." muttered Asuka, asthey appeared. "Hey Shinji." said Kensuke and Tohji in syncronization. "Tohji -your leg and arm . . .?" Tohji smirked "Well, since I'm a ghost, I get all mybody parts back." "And I'm glad!" said Hikari, more bold than usual. "You look happy, fourth child." stated Asuka dryly. "No kidding? I guess I know what's important now." "I'd like to know." said Shinji quietly. Tohji nodded "Alright. Here's my impressive psychological thoughts on this. Even if the people around you don't understand you, if they care about you anyways, it's enough of a reason to be happy." "To be kind to others is enough of a reason to live."said Hikari. "You two are so full of it." said Asuka."Maybe - " "Bye Shinji. Bye Asuka." said Kensuke slowly. "I wasn't very important, but if you remember me, I guessthat's good enough." Kensuke faded away slowly. "Later, Kensuke." said Tohji, grabbing Hikari's hand. Hikari blushed and smiled. "Where are you off to now?" asked Asuka. "We're going to visit his sister. She's doing much betternow." said Hikari. Asuka nodded."Goodbye, newlyweds!" said Tohji as he and Hikari fadedaway. In a deserted ghost metropolis, two people were grinning like fools. The last of their nearly extinct race. But things like that don't matter when you're eccentric. All that matters in the quest for happiness in shadowy memories.Author's rant: This was my first eva fic. Written after seeing those Tohji episodes (drool). I hadn't seen anything past Genesis 0:9 at this point. I love Tohji Suzuhara, I don't care! Anyways, this was supposed to be rather tongue-in-cheek, if my memory serves me correctly. (Hmmm, Tongue in cheek, eh? WAIII! TOHJI-KUN!!! WAIII!!!!) So, apologies for errors. Comments can be sent to ef991@freenet.carleton.ca
