Anna arrived home, feeling breathless.
She ran into the kitchen and found her parents and sister reading the newspaper.
She slowly approached them, and felt very guilty for what she had said.
"Mom, Dad, Amy," Anna began, "I'm sorry for
what happened the other night."
Her parents and her sister looked up at her.
They all smiled.
"So you've finally come to your senses," Amy
said.
"I'm sorry about what I've said," Anna apologized,
"I've finished my story. I just wanted to prove that I'm a talented
writer."
"You wrote a story?" her mother asked in amazement.
"You'll have to show it to us," her father
smiled.
Anna felt encouraged and continued, "The story
needs to be polished, but I'll do that after the exams. I have to
begin to study now."
"You'd better," Amy laughed, "if you need
any help, just ask me, okay? I've just finished my exams for university."
"Thanks, Amy," Anna said, fighting her tears
of happiness, "and you, too, Mom and Dad."
After a few more words, Anna went to her room
and took out her school books to study. She hoped she still had time
to change her fate, that is, to pass the exams!
* * * * * *
The night before the exams, Anna could not
sleep. She turned on her bed and tried to fall asleep in different
positions, but she was not tired at all. She thought of Dan, and
how much she missed him. She got off her bed and walked to the window.
She looked out into the night sky and saw...Don on his bike in front of
her house!
"Don!" she said in surprise.
"Shh!" Don said quietly. He motioned
for her to come down.
Anna immediately put on her coat and shoes,
and went out the door. She ran to Don's bike.
"What are you doing here? It's so late!"
Anna said, but she was filled with joy.
Don responded in excitement, "I don't know.
I just wanted to see you all of a sudden. I'm leaving right after
the exams. This is a miracle! I've just waited here for a few
minutes, calling your name in my head...and here you are!"
"We must be telepathically connected!" Anna
laughed.
"Climb on," Don said quickly, "I want to show
you something before it's too late."
Anna climbed on the back of his bike. She held onto his
waist as he rode speedily along the night road.
"Can you paddle with me on your back?" Anna
asked anxiously. She knew she did not weight little at all.
"Of course," Don replied, out of breath, "I'm
going to carry you on my back for the rest of my life."
Anna smiled shyly, feeling glad she had came
out.
Don rode up the last hill and finally reached
his destination. He stopped his bike and they got onto the ground.
"Here it is," Don pointed out, "just a few
more minutes!"
She was puzzled. What did he want to
show her on top of the hill?
Suddenly, there was light shining from beneath.
Anna's eyes opened wide as the sun rose up, different brightly colours
shone onto the ground. From above, she could see the entire town
in the orange sky.
"It's beautiful," Anna whispered, "I've never
seen the sun rise before."
"I know," Don said, "that's why I want to
show it to you."
Anna gave him a bright smile and hugged him.
Don held onto her.
"Grandpa told me about your story. I'm
sorry I wasn't there to encourage you. I was thinking
about you all these weeks and didn't know what I should do, since I'll
be away for a long time," he explained.
Anna's face was filled with sadness.
He let go of Anna.
"I've found my ambition to be a violin carpenter.
You've found your goal to be a writer. We must both achieve our dreams
in different sides of the world," Don said.
"I know," Anna agreed, "I'm going to miss
you."
"Me, too," Don said. He thought of something
and asked Anna, "Hey, did you know why my name was always on the book cards
before yours?"
"No," Anna said as she shook her head, "I've
always wondered about it, though."
"I wanted you to notice me," Don laughed,
"I always saw you in the library, but you never looked at me. I figured
you'll notice my name on the book cards. So I've read every story
book before you did."
Anna was touched. "You read all those
books for me?" she cried.
They both laughed.
Then, Don was serious.
"Anna," he began, "I'll be away for a long
time, but I want to ask you a question. Your answer would have a
great effect on the rest of my life." He got on one of his knees
and held Anna's hands.
"Anna," he said as he looked lovingly up at
her, "will you marry me?"
Anna could not move and was speechless
"Wha...," said cried,"Are you nuts?
We're both so young!"
"I know I'll never care for anyone but you,"
Don said, "we don't have to marry right now, of course. I just want
a promise."
Anna replied without thinking. "Yes,"
she whispered.
"Yes?" Don cried and stood up, "You've said
yes?"
Anna nodded shyly, her eyes on the ground.
Don yelled out in laughter.
"She said yes!" he cried, "She said yes!"
He held Anna and swung her around in circles.
Anna shrieked with laughter.
Don yelled out to the morning air around him,
"I love you, Anna!"
