The Matrix

**** of 5

"The Matrix." Here's a movie that is more than worth your time to go and see.
I'll admit, so it's been out for a while, that's not important. What is important
is that you go out and buy yourself a ticket and see this movie as soon as you
can. It's that good.

Now, I can't exactly tell you what the plot is. That would be a bit of a bad
thing, mainly because all of the fun is what the plot does to your mind. This
movie is the kind that makes you think you're on crack... the good kind. It's
the kind of movie that will make you think... hard. It's the kind of movie that
will make you paranoid of everything and everyone. The bottom line is quite simple:
don't go and see this movie if you're either drunk or high, 'cause if you do, then
you'll be messed up for the rest of your life, I can promise you that.

The plot may seem superficial at first, but it poses a question that many have likely
asked themselves before: How do we know that our reality is real or just made up by
some one else? Let's face it, we've all wondered whether or not we were in some one
else's dream, and that we'd die if they ever woke up. I know that was something that I
thought when I was a kid. This movie brings back that kind of reality-based paranoia,
except in a really big way. That's how this movie rises up above almost every single
other science fiction flick out there: It's intelligent.

Most science-fiction movies are lacking in intelligence. Admit it. Was "Predator" an
intelligent movie? No, not really. How about "Starship Troopers"? Nope, no intelligence
there. Not even the "Star Wars" movies are known for their intelligence and thought-provoking
presence. Rather, they're known for fun, which is why they are still rated as the best in
sci-fi/fantasy. The point is, it is hard to find really good, really thoughtful science fiction
in the movie business today. Even the "Star Trek" movies, while most are thought-provoking (or,
at least, they try to be), a good portion of them don't succeed. The reason: They fail to be
truly entertaining enough to keep our attention.

"The Matrix" does not fail.
This is a movie that entertains while bombing you with that thought as to whether the reality
in which we live is actually real or make-believe. You'll never see action sequences like
the ones in this movie unless you go and rent a Hong Kong action movie. Also, this is one of
the few movies where Keanu Reeves is actually good. I'm serious. Up until now his best movies
were the "Bill & Ted" movies and "The Devil's Advocate". Now we have "The Matrix" to add to that
diminuitive list of flicks.

Pay attention to even the names in this movie. Go out and get a dictionary for naming people,
because from what I've heard, many of the names in this movie are significant. Actually, a
couple of them are quite obvious. Keanu's character, for instance, is named "Neo", which means
"new". Lawrence Fishburn's character is named "Morpheus", which means "dream". Apparently, all of
the people in this movie are thus named. Pay attention to it. It could be fun to decipher.

Check this movie out. It's an amazing trip, and it's definitely one to make you think. If
you want brainless, go out and rent "Starship Troopers". This one is for thinking audiences
only.

Video Re-review
***** out of 5

Okay, so it's got one extra star to it. What can I say? This movie has it all: It's got
an original and thought-provoking plot (interesting concept in an industry where it's all
been done before), some fabulous fight-sequences, and great special effects! It's got
it all, baby! And it's just as good on video as it was in theatres! Go out, rent or
buy, just try to find widescreen. You get the full screen (yes, I'm a purist, screw off)
and there ain't nothin' cropped to fit it on the TV screen.
