Iron Monkey
*** out of 5

A martial-arts flick from a number of years ago that was an inspiration to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Iron Monkey is a fun, chop-sockey kung-fu kind of a movie that will leave most satisfied.

Note the use of the word "most." I, for one, left the theatre feeling quite satisfied, indeed. Certainly, it wasn't the best movie I've ever seen, and it certainly wasn't better than Crouching Tiger, but it was still enjoyable.

And even this enjoyablility is based on if you can suspend your disbelief for the action sequences, which run along the same lines of free-flying mayhem we bore witness in Crouching Tiger. In this movie, however, there's a lot less grace and more ass-kicking (note "chop-sockey" in the above paragraphs). The story, as well, isn't much to write home about. Call it a Chinese take on Robin Hood, if you will.

That's not to say that this movie wasn't any good. Not at all. It was quite fun. But it wasn't an epic tale of whatever.

End result? It's an action movie that's a good time, nothing much more, but definitely nothing less. Recommended for certain.
