From Hell
***1/2 out of 5

From Hell is a movie directed by the Hughes Brothers, and is based on a graphic novel by Alan Moore(he wrote the acclaimed graph novel The Watchmen, among others). It stars Johnnie Depp, Robbie Coltrane, and Heather Graham in a fervent search for the infamous Jack the Ripper.

The result is a dark, dank, and foreboding murder-mystery that casts a... ah... "royal" spin on the theory of who's behind the murders. That aspect of the plot, alone, makes the movie quite interesting to watch, and the performances are also quite good (it's always fun to see Depp do his thing).

Problems with the movie? It's a bit too graphic, shall we say? I mean, women are being murdered here, and I'll always have a problem seeing that happen on-screen. Another problem that the movie has is that it's a bit too long, and so it drags at parts.

End result? This is a pretty good movie with some interesting concepts and some good acting. Worth a peek, methinks.
