Blue Streak
*** out of 5

I can't say much about this movie other than I didn't like it too much. It was amusing,
yes, I'll give it that much. But if you're looking for a comedy where you'll bust a gut
as you piss yourself laughing, look elsewhere.

Perhaps I'm being too critical. If you like Martin Lawrence, then you'll thoroughly enjoy
this movie about a jewel thief who hides a gem in a building under construction only to
find out that, two years later, it has turned into a police station. He must now devise
a plan to get the jewel out.

Sounds like a promising premise to a comedy, right? Right. Unfortunately, this movie just
isn't all that funny. As I said, it's amusing, and it's best when Lawerence is not going
completely over the top with his antics. There is a scene where he goes undercover (you can
barely recognize him) as a pizza-delivery boy with the worst dental plan I have ever bore
witness to. This scene is amusing, but really adds nothing to the movie itself. Yet, the
scene where Lawerence is investigating a supposed robbery in an autoparts shop is quite funny.
And let's not forget any scene where he interrogates a suspect. These, while being somewhat
exaggerated (but, then again, comedy is often marked by exaggeration), they are also almost
arguably the funniest scenes in the movie.

But then, I ask myself, where does this movie fail? Where is its fault? I can't say. There's
the fact that when Lawerence is shocked or finds need to celebrate, he does so for far too
long. I'm not saying that it's a bad movie, I'm just saying that it's not the best movie, either.
As far as I'm concerned, Bad Boys, another movie with Lawerence posing as a cop, but
in that instance it's for real, was a better and funnier flick. But then, they're both different
in tone and just type of movie, so it's not really fair of me to compare the two.

I thought it was simply an average movie. However, it's worth the money to go see if you're a
Martin Lawerence fan, or if you want a fun waste of time. If you're a bit careful about how
you spend your money, though, I recommend either waiting for this to come out on video or going
to a matinee show or flocking to see it on cheap night (if those still exist).
