Goblins vs. Daemon Host You know, I brought the camera with me, but forgot to take any pictures the whole time... Sorry. But it was a nail biting game! A fine way to finish the league! Both armies were somewhat different from the normal versions ued by both players. The gobbos dropped the trolls (who would most likely have been cooked by Fire spells galore...) and the fast cav, replaced them with some Wolfriders (finally!) a pair of bolt throwers, and two DOW cannons. The latter was encouraged by two things. One being the totally awful artillery clarifications in WD that prevent lobbers from firing without line of site, but allow cannons to fire without LOS, through woods, and even pick out characters . The other is the fact that at least half the games have been plagued by impassable terrain separating the two halves of the battlefield becuase of (IMHO) too free of a terrain placement system. The Daemons also showed up with a few DOW, but not cannons (which I half expected). Instead they had a wizard (bringing their casting pool up to 17 dice...) and some fast cav. Basically, the gobbo plan was to pound the lesser daemons with missile fire from the arty, archers, wolfriders, and chariots (4 of them), charging in with the latter two if I could finish them off. The daemon plan was to avoid combat at all, and kill the gobbos with magic, using panic tests to make matters worse. Well, we ended up with the cliffs dividing the table again, so I only had about a foot on each edge of the table to squeeze my army around. This meant that my infantry units never even thought about seeing combat (even marching at top speed every turn), and the bolt throwers and lobber waited around all battle with no targets. Still, it didn't go too bad. The cannons hosed the lesser daemons each turn, and I managed to shoot up most of the spawn. The Lord of Change got smacked upside the head by a cannon ball, and finished off when he got too close to a goblin fanatic. Still, panic ran rampant, and the daemons backed away to the far corner of the table, out of my reach. The gobbos just had to keep advancing, and take damage from magic. Eventually, in the LAST TURN panic spread through the ranks, even with the general around. The worst was when a huge unit of night gobbos along with a shaman took off running, without taking a wound. That one unit meant that the game was a Daemon victory. If they had made it, it would have been a draw or possibly a goblin win. Nail biting game that even my opponent said should have been mine. I disagree, as I was worried about the army falling apart for most of the game. The fact that they made it until turn 6 without more than the occassional rout was a fortunate. So the Gobins end up in second place (this Daemon army was the undefeated, first place winner). The greenies ended with 6 wins, 2 losses, and a draw. One of the Vampire Counts armies is on my tail, however, and if they win their last game this week, they could tie for second. Rumor has it that the gobbos may end up with the best painted award as well. Best sportsman is probably up in the air, since there were alot of great players in the league. I'll post the league results when they're in. |
