Goblins vs. Dark Elves After suffering a slid defeat last week, the little greenies were out for blood this time around, A swift recovery from the unfortunate battle against the Vamps, and the gobbos were ready to walk all over the Dark Elves. Or that's what they'd like to think. Well, the gobbos DID win. And they did a great job. But, as ususal with GW games, the dice should get as much credit. The battlefield was clogged with terrain, and it was near impossible to deploy 2000 points of gobbos on a 4x4 table... again. Woods in the center, and woods on the left sie of my deployment zone, as well as the opposite deployment zone. So the bulk of the army formed up in depth on the right side, with fast cav on the end, trolls next to them, then the big gobbo regiment with the general, and a big night gobbo spear regiment next to them. Behind the trolls and fast cav were FIVE chariots. Over on the left were two regiments of night gobbo archers. The big regiements of infantry were stuck behind the woods, with probably no hope of ever seeing combat in the game. But it was a choice of sending them in with no support on the right, or placing faith in the ability of the trolls, and several waves of fast attack troops (cav and chariots) to get into combat. It ended up that there were four 6-man scout units in the woods in front of the infantry, hiding in the woods. They came to the edge to fire in the first turn. On the gobbo turn, we charged, and they fled. This was one of the key moments in the game. Three of them fled to avoid combat. They ran next to two regiments of corsairs, several repearter bolt throwers, and two wizards. Over the next four turns, these troops would repeatedly cause each other to panic, rally, then panic again. On the open side, missile fire took down the cav, two chariots, and magic burnt one troll (as well as killing the regen ability for the rest of the game!!) But by turn 3 and 4 they were all in combat, and rolling up the flank, hitting regiments as they rallied. On about the second turn, one of the other 'big' die rolls hit. The dark elf wizard lord miscast Conflaguration of Doom. He lost the spell, and was knocked down one spell level. He had gone seriously magic heavy, and was counting on magic and shooting to win the day (pretty much no melee troops). So this was a serious blow. But, that is what one gets for placing so much faith in magic, which is vulnerable to bad (or good) dice rolls. Dark Elves conceded the game on turn 4. The gobbos are ready to kick some daemon ass in the final game. The daemon army is undefeated, so I've got my work cut out for me. As it stands, the Daemons are in first, with no losses. Last I heard, the Vamps that had beat me have lost 2 games, and I have lost one and had one draw. SO, this last game will not affect the first place position, but could mean the difference between the greenies getting second or third. |
