WEEK 2
Goblins vs. Dogs of War

Not only was this my second game with the goblins, but I had never faced the Dogs of War before. I had no idea what to expect, since they have such a wide range of options available to them.

On top of that, since I am in the middle of packing, I had to make do with what figures I had available to me. I came up a bit short on actual gobbos (well, and those 6 trolls...) so I had to hire some of *my own* Dogs of War. Good thing I had some Huns around to act as Light Cavalry for my gobbos. (Still trying to get my hands on some wolfriders.)

So, with my army packed, I rolled up a newspaper and prepared to smack the Dogs of War firmly across the nose...

The battle lines are drawn. Gobbos on the left, from the top down: NG archers, Chariot behind Trolls, Snotlings, NG spear, Gobbos w/Battle Std and General, and a Rock Lobber behind, then a Chariot, the Light Cav followed by a Chariot, and more NG archers followed by yet another Chariot.

You can see two mushroom counters in front of the big center units. They blew the animosity on turn one. What made this much worse was that I needed to move the general closer to the trolls, since I had misjudged the distance and they were rolling stupidity checks on their own Ld (4!)

Across from me, from the top down, I faced: Lumpy Kook and his halfling archers, some Duelists, Pikemen, Golgfags Ogres, a Cannon on the hill, Dwarves, Light Cav followed by the Paymaster leading some Heavy Cav.

A turn or two into the game... One turn one I got a LUCKY Rocklobber shot on the Cannon. Dead center, crushed the thing. Saved me ALOT of headaches. Light horse and chariots move up on the right flank, in a staggered formation so anyone getting charged gets flanked by another chariot. General's big honkin' unit STILL suffering from animosity, and has not moved... Trolls still stupid. The snotlings are the only ones making a direct frontal assault. Idiots. :)

Another turn or two later and its fanatic madness. Acuatlly, I mangled one of my own archer units, as well as some significant casualties to my NG spearmen by the time the game was over. In the upper right, the Light Cav and first chariot overran the enemy Light Cav, and followed into the Heavy Cav. Due to the angle they were at, the Light Cav hit the Heavy Cav in the flank. They then won the combat, chased the paymaster off the table. This was one of the most serious blows I was able to deal in the game.

In the mean time the trolls are still stupid and about to get mangled by the Ogres and Pike...

The Ogres clear the center, only to find themselves the victims of not one, but TWO stray fanatics which hit them (after one passes through my own night gobbos!), and causes them to rout at the end of the game. On the far left, Lumpin and the boys are whittled down until only Lumpy himself is left, with one wound. *grmble* I hate halflings. I was impressed I was able to outshoot them with night gobbos!

In the end, it was a solid win for the Gobbos, but partially due to several lucky rolls. One was the radar guided rock lobber shot on the cannon, another was the Ogres getting hosed by the fanatics and then missing their rally attempt, and a third (fourth and fifth...) was the Wizard Lord general failing a panic test, then missing every rally attempt until she ran right off the table. In return, I made most of my panic checks throughout the game. Go figure.

Good game, tough army, good opponent. I think we both played good games, with the random factor tilting things into my favor.

Next on the diner plate... Fried Lizardmen...
