The plaque rests on the ground and the base of the sculpture.
The inscription above reads:

ISAMU NOGUCHI
(1904 - 1988)
INTETRA   1974
STAINLESS STEEL
GIFT OF ZIUTA AND JOSEPH JAMES AKSTON

"The essence of sculpture is for me the perception of space, the continuum of our existence." ----- Isamu Noguchi

Isamu Noguchi was born in 1904, and continued making sculpture until his death in 1988. His career of more than sixty years intersected some of the crucial persons and places of our time, as well as some of the major cultural figures of our century, in fields ranging from sculpture and architecture to dance and design.

Born in Los Angeles, raised in Tokyo and Yokohama, and educated in Indiana, Isamu Noguchi's early life predicted his peripatetic course.  First embracing sculpture in New York, Noguchi traveled to Paris, and later to China and Japan, to learn his craft. After the Second World War he toured the world studying early sculpture, and he continued to move between the United States, Japan and Italy to carve stone and complete landscape and garden projects.

Isamu Noguchi was known for his sensitive use of materials. In addition to employing traditional media such as stone and wood, Noguchi broadened the notion of sculpture to include the use of water and light, and experimented widely with new materials.

There is far too much information about this great man to be covered adequately here.  For details on his life and works, visit The Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum website; or to view his other amazing geometric sculptures, click here.
