This is not really a Robbers' Cave story, but it is linked to Belle Starr,
who reportedly hid out in the caves from time to time.
Although Belle was a notorious outlaw, this is a story of her cousin, Henry
Starr, a very much lesser-known outlaw.
Henry Starr and his gang rode their horses into the tiny town of Stroud,
OK, one hot day and robbed the bank. Stroud was a quiet but cohesive
community and the citizens were incensed by the robbery. They immediately
banded together to try to apprehend the gang. In the melee that followed,
Henry (the gang leader, I believe) was shot in the leg. His gang rode out
in a cloud of dust, abandoning Henry to his fate at the hands of angry
Stroudites (Stroudians?). A group of men was carrying Henry off the street
(presumably to get medical care for his wound before incarceration).
Someone mentioned that perhaps the gang would return for their fallen
leader. That so alarmed the good men of Stroud that they dropped Henry in
the street and scattered in fear. It was left to the town 's law officers
to collect Henry and take him to the proper place.
My details may be somewhat clouded but that is the essence of the story.
It is (or was) documented at a barber shop in Stroud, complete with
newspaper clippings. I'm sure the city, county (Lincoln) and state (Okla)
historical societies would have more detailed records, if anyone is
interested.
The county seat, Chandler, about 10 miles from Stroud, has an excellent
historical museum.
Stroud has other claims to fame, such as the annual brick and rolling pin
throw events held in conjunction with cities named Stroud in England,
Canada and Australia.
With regard to Robbers' Cave, it is a beautiful park, with camp grounds and
cabins to rent. Some cabins are perched on a steep cliff with a terrific
view. I remember a nice swimming beach, paddle boats and swimming at
night.
There are great trails through the caves. I remember one spot where rock
formed a natural corral that various badmen used to keep their horses.
Only had to barricade off one small space to confine the horses.
I want to go back.
