Ashtray Motel

It might have been the screaming
Or it might have been the smell,
But it woke me from my dreaming
At the ashtray motel.
I was passed out in a corner
With my face against the wall
And my hand was on the phone
I hoped it'd be my wakeup call.
It was the alcoholic desk clerk.
She'd awakened from her snores.
So exhausted from her bitching
At the winos and the whores.
In her stinking little office
She was sweaty and obese.
And she kept a pot of coffee
For the neighborhood police.

I was battered and hungover
And I thought I'd gone to hell
When I realized that I was
At the ashtray motel.
With the scum along the baseboards
Clinging grimly to the rugs
And the rodents and the spiders
And the filthy stinking bugs.
With the traffic of the airport
And the rumble of the trains
Traffic humming on the freeway
And the gurgle of the drains
Well I wished I'd been arrested
And they'd put me in a cell,
Because anyplace is better than
The ashtray motel!
