Pumpkin Island Light

Pumpkin Island Light

Pumpkin Island marks the northern entrance to
Eggemoggin Reach on the east side of Penobscot Bay.
Heavily travelled in the 19th century,
President Franlin Pierce authorized the
construction of a lighthouse in 1852.
The lighthouse is a 25 foot brick tower with
a fifth order Fresnel lens, among the earliest in
Maine to installed and was lighted
for the first time in 1854.
A work shed attached the tower to
the 1-1/2 story keepers house,
and an oil house was added in 1904.
Dating 1885, the boathouse was enlarged in 1906.
It was fitted with a new lantern in 1889 increasing the
height of the light by three feet and
a new lens was installed in 1909.
Automated in 1930 and was among several discontinued
lights being offered by the government at auction,
with several private owners since.
