Spring Point Ledge Light

Spring Point Ledge Light

In 1891 after so many vessels ran aground
because of the dangerous ledge that
marks the western side of the shipping
channel into Portland Harbor,
a group of shipping companies
convinced the government
to build a lighthouse.
The funds were not available
until 1896 when construction began.
There were set backs caused by
storms and disputes about materials,
so the construction was not
completed until 1897.
This lighthouse is of the "sparkplug"style,
built on a cylindrical cast iron caisson,
but unlike most towers of this type it is
built from brick and not cast iron.
The lighthouse has four levels,
a keeper's office,a watchroom,
and two levels for living quarters.
A fog bell hung on the side and a
fifth order Fresnel lens was installed.
Automated in 1934, and in 1951
the lighthouse was connected with
the mainland by a 900 foot breakwater.
