Boys' Soccer by Will C. This year the boys� soccer team is very optimistic about the upcoming season. The team has great talent and an excellent coaching staff. The coaches are Coach Cole and Coach Pearson. The players on the team are Alex A., Walker B., Ryan., Matt L., Stephen O., Steven., Matthew., Patrick H., Tim L., Jeromy L., Alex P. , Jerry M., Barrett W., Webster B., Frank B., Will C., Scott D., Phil P. The Patriots are managed wonderfully by Rachel B. and Andrea S. The Patriots have a friendly schedule by playing six home games and four away games. They play rivals Byrd and Short Pump on the road, but they play Chickahominy at home. This year looks to be a memorable one for the Tuckahoe Patriots.

Girls' Tennis by Jarrod F. Members of the girls� tennis team this year are: Katy C., Katherine K., Corey P., Abby E., Laura F., Whitney G., Elaine H., Josie H., Elizabeth H., Ivy M., Megan R., Emily R., Amanda C., Anne Stewart C., Caroline C., Gennie E., Kate G., Sara G., Cabel M., Maria T., Lauren W. and Amanda W.. Caroline C. and Sara G. are the team captains. It�s going to be a good year for the 1998 tennis team, especially against our chief rivals-- Byrd, Short Pump and Chickahominy. Cheerleading by Beau C. I�m sure you�ve heard 1,000,001 cheerleader stereotypes, but the sheer athleticism and determination of all 20 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will change your perception in a second. Practices are held every weekday until 5:00. Recently, they�ve been rehearsing dances and routines for the October 13th pep rally. 8th grader Carly Brown stated, �Cheerleading is like a family. We all have to work together to get things done.� That family includes: Meghan K., Corrie L., Christina K., Allison K., April L., Erin S., Blair T., Blair B., Carly B., Abby D., Mallory H., Ashley H., Ashley K., Morgan L., Jennifer M., Anne Marie O., Laura P., Allison W., captains Melanie K. and Elizabeth W., and Coach Gervin. Co-captain Melanie K. summed it all up in one sentence. �In the end,� she said, �the friendships make it all worth it.� Football Tuckahoe Bidding for Winning Season by Stephen S. Coach Didlake is excited about the upcoming football season. Last year�s season ended in only 3 losses. This year�s tryouts were competitive and the coaches were proud of all that tried out. About 80 people tried out for the team of which only 53 made it. The manager is Micheal H. Girls' Basketball by Declan G. The Tuckahoe Middle School Girls� basketball team has been preparing for another great season with coach Hudgens and assistant coach Budd. Congratulations to the new team for 1998. They are Jennifer G., Alie L., Nancy S., Catherine M., Rebecca P., Emily G., Phebe G., Caitlyn H., Adaline M., Emily M., Claire W., Caitlin H., Tanya L., Lindsay E., Reba O., Emily R., Sharria L., Martha U., and Mollie L. A big thanks goes to all the managers who will be sacrificing their afternoons to help the team. They are Jamie C., Becca B., Rachael C., Cammy N., and Kate L. The basketball players are already hard at work practicing every day after school. According to team member Catherine M. and manager Becca B., it looks like they�re going to have another great season at Tuckahoe. So come out and support the team! Games start at 4:15 every Tuesday and Thursday through November fifth. Big Mac & Sosa-- Kings of Swing by Beau C. I was going to write about the Milwaukee Brewers� move from the American League to the National League, but a member of the sports department, who shall remain nameless, convinced me that Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa story was a bit more appealing. I suppose he was right. It�s only that Big Mac broke Roger Maris� record by an unbelievable 9 HR and by 15%. In perspective, if someone were to break McGwire�s record by 15%, he�d have to hit an almost impossible 81 HR! Mac incredibly also led the majors in walks with over 160. Even more astounding, at one point NL MVP Sammy Sosa was trailing �two all beef biceps, special swing, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions in a Cardinals uniform Big Mac� 24 homers to nine homers. Do you think Sammy�s 20 June homers had something to do with his breaking the record? Maybe, I don�t know. The Kings of Swing have handled themselves beautifully throughout the entire season, never refusing to talk to the swarm of press after every single game of the year, answering every question. The warm embrace after McGwire�s 62nd between the two sluggers brought millions of people together and almost made them forget about the Clinton scandal. Sammy�s 66 HR and Mac�s invincible 70 HR is, needless to say, a record that will stand for quite some time. Exhausted, McGwire said in the last post-game press meeting of the season, �I�m going to the beach.� I have a great idea. Fox should come out with a new show right after the Simpsons on Sunday about McGwire�s season called, �That 70�s Show.� Well, maybe next year... College Football Season Will Be Memorable by Will C. This year in college there has been one team that has been prominent in their quest for the National Championship and that has been Ohio State. They have beaten good teams like West Virginia and look to be the only team that wants to capture college football�s most prestigious trophy. After Florida State and Florida stumbled to NC State and Tennessee respectively, they have basically killed their chances of a National Championship opening the door for Ohio State. I predict that Ohio State will beat Nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl and take the National Championship with a 12-0 record. Ohio State is led by linebacker Andy Katzenmoyer and quarterback Joe Germaine. Their best wide receiver, David Boston, is considered one of the best wide receivers in the country. Florida State will knock off Tennessee in the Sugar Bowl and take the number four ranking. Chris Weinke will lead FSU to a victory with help from the �Noles defense and Peter Warrick. UCLA will beat Syracuse in the Orange bowl and take the number two ranking. UCLA has possibly the best quarterback in the country with Cade McNown. He should lead the Bruins to a victory in this game. In the last of the new Bowl Championship Series Kansas State will beat Florida to take the number five ranking. Michael Bishop will lead the Wildcats along with Kansas State�s ferocious defense. The games in Bowl Championship Series will be televised on ABC. The Bowl Championship Series was devised so the best two teams in the country will play each other for the National Championship so that there would not be Co-National Champions. This year looks to be very promising for Virginia and Virginia Tech. They are both in the top 25 and hope to stay there for the remainder of the year. They will meet on November 28 at Virginia Tech�s Lane Stadium. It looks to be a very exciting and a very meaningful game for both teams� winter vacation plans. Virginia is led by quarterback Aaron Brooks and All- American safety Anthony Poindexter. Tech is led by quarterback Al Clarke and an excellent defense. Virginia�s schedule looks to be more favorable for the remainder of the year than Virginia Tech�s. Both teams are in the hunt for a conference crown and an alliance bid.
