"Where have all the children gone?"
by

Jack Mann

Where have all the children gone?
Have they grown up too fast?
Do our children know too much for their age?
They seem to go from babies to teens
With nothing in between
What happened to the days of carefree play?
Without a worry in the world
They know more about sex at six
Than we did at sixteen
They are not old enough to read
But they already are worried about dying
“If I go outside to play,
will somebody kidnap me,
and do bad things to me?”
Don’t talk to strangers
Never let anyone give you a ride
Or you may never come back alive.
We teach them these things in order to protect them
But in doing so, we have robbed them of their childhood.
Where have all the children gone?
We have sent them to adulthood before their time!
To a world full of fear, worry and desperation.

What kind of a monster have we created?
Only time will tell.
Or maybe it already has!
