"The Poet"

A poignant laureate,
Inspired to create,
Told a story exceedingly sad,
Of an enchanting witch,
The resemblance of which,
Could under no condition be had.
Touched by what he had writ,
A homely little twit,
Thought to lessen his languor.
Did her person avail,
To the confounded male,
Who forthwith hacked out a disclaimer.
But though it was clever,
He remembered he never,
Such a positive relation began.
So he tore up that note,
While recalling the quote,
About a bird in the hand.
