Mexico City

At Los Tacos del Güero, fillings run from Mexican red rice topped with queso fresco to liver and onions, all washed down with an agua fresca.

In the trendy Art Deco neighborhood of La Condesa, a tiny family-run taco joint, Los Tacos del Güero (Amsterdam 135, corner of Avenida Michoacán), has been dishing out the best fast food in town for almost 40 years. Inside the cramped storefront, you'll find pots laden with some 20 different fillings: fried chorizo with potato, chicharrón (pork skin) in tomatillo sauce, cauliflower fritters, liver with onions, shredded nopales with queso fresco. There are always three kinds of cheese-stuffed chiles, the tacos are made with fresh corn tortillas, and the guacamole is fantastic. Eat standing on the sidewalk while drinking an agua fresca (water and the fresh fruit of the day).
