I was a CE Idiot! -Inbox |
Ted Butz is the most technology resistant guy in our office. We figured if he could explain how he managed to get a grasp on Windows CE and its usefulness that anyone could. Thus we present to you a series of articles designed to put you in the know about the basics of Windows CE -from the perspective of an idiot! Inbox Previous Articles "Inputting Data" | "Contacts" After reading last weeks article on "Contacts" you probably now have all your friends, business partners and enemies safely stored away in your pocket. That CE devices make great contact managers came as no surprise even to me. In fact initially I was skeptical that these devices were anything more than glorified electronic day planners. I maybe a little slow on the uptake but I've always believed that one should keep an open mind. Just not at both ends. So with that willing attitude I thought I'd better check out "Inbox". The Windows CE answer to email. I figure with the internet being the new frontier that if CE devices can make use of any of the internets dazzling capabilities then they would qualify as serious computers. Tap the "Start" button and Inbox is immediately one of the options available for you to tap -go for it. With Inbox now open before you, you will see across the top Windows bar offering you a choice of "File" "Compose" "Go" or "Service." The first time I did this I figured I would send myself a test email and tapped File to select new message. However this was wrong. File in Windows CE allows you to manipulate and organize previously created emails. You can also create a new folder to store emails from this menu. If you want to write a new email in CE you chose the "Compose" menu (actually sounds obvious enough when you think about it) and you will be provided the standard options of writing a new message, replying, forwarding and a few more choices. Tapping "New Message" Pops up an empty email form waiting for you to type in an email address. I've always been a body of the message first kind of guy. So I doubled tapped in the body form field instead and cranked out my first Palm-size e-mail. I wouldn't want to write an exceptionally long Dear John letter even with my new JOT expertise on the small screen using a stylus but it certainly was easy to write few quick hellos and a reminder or two. The idea that you could write a few useful emails in a cab or waiting in the airport suddenly didn't sound so far fetched. One also nice touch is that similar to your PC the Contacts and the Address Book and the Inbox all work together. Any email address you put in your CE device under Contacts appear automatically in the "Address Book" of Inbox which you can find again under the "Compose" menu. You'll note that you need to have the To: form field highlighted when you select "Address Book" for it to offer you a scrolling window of email addresses. Highlight the desired one and tap OK. I suppose after letting you read this entire article I should admit now that I'm just a big tease because I'm really only talking about creating an email and not really how to send one. The reason being that to send an email you need to have an internal modem in your device, or an external modem or a compactflash card modem that fits in the compactflash card slot of your CE device (if it has this feature). How that works is a whole other article just waiting to be written. Also being that this article is being written by an idiot for idiots, lets not overload the brain all at once -agreed? T.B. |
