descento.jpg (17557 bytes)  Descent to Rome      One-eyed Hannibal fell upon the Roman empire with great ferocity and cunning in the year 218 B.C.  The mountains took heavy toll on his army and particularly his elephants, of which only one completed the journey to the very gates of Rome, and it also cost him one of his eyes.  What an apparition he must have been to face.  Though the Alps proved the greater enemy than the Romans he was still able to meet them on equal terms and subdue them at every turn.  Had he only followed the advice of his generals he would entered Rome and taken possession of the city and history would have been vastly different than the latin-based one we know today.   That he accomplished what he did has to rank among the mightiest of achievements in military history.  Even to this day his exploits and military tactics are studied in war colleges around the world.

In this piece unseen hands pull at grappling hooks and nets in order to topple the hated symbol of Rome, S.P.Q.R., standing for the Senate and People of Rome.  The Alps loom far above in ominous majesty as a soldier just ahead of the elephant points the way to Rome itself.  Could it be Hannibal?

bigtouch.jpg (13874 bytes)    Touchdown!      The fans of the San Francisco Forty Niners know the meaning of this picture well.  The picture shows more action than there actually was in real time but in real time this gut wrenching drama and the tremendous elation of victory that followed told me to paint this epic moment.  My salute to Terrell Owens and Forty Niners.

breakino.jpg (17360 bytes)    Flash80, Still Breaking Records     Jerry Rice breaks into the clear, eyes set firmly on the ball he will carry into history.  Symbolically, the flying, broken rocks are the flying, broken records, showing that the game of football was well within his command.  At this point of his career there are few records remaining to be broken, only extend.

Noire.jpg (29194 bytes)   watch.jpg (13594 bytes)Noire Mystique        Seen on other pages this is one of the first of the latter day pictures, after 1980.   Seen is the watch that bears the insignia 'African Man....First man'.  Thirty five dollars will get you one, male and female sizes.
