Over 1,000 people attended the Asian American Coalition of Chicago's 18th Annual Lunar New Year Celebration Dinner Banquet on Saturday, January 27, 2001. The Governor, the Mayor, several elected officials, dignitaries, and television celebrities were present on this well anticipated evening. Entitled with the theme "Shining Light in the New Millennium," this year the event was sponsored by the Korean American community and co-sponsored by the Sikh American Heritage Organization and the Punjabi Cultural Society of Chicago. Over 50 Sikhs were present at the event and the Punjabi Cultural Society Youth Bhangra Team performed the Punjabi folk dance Bhangra as a part of the evening's events. The night began at 5:30 with the following featured events:
