| The recorder, a crude wind instrument commonly forced on unwilling elementary schoolchildren, was the beginning of a career for techno-pop songstress Dido. She began playing the instrument at the age of six, and by ten she had studied at the Guildhall school in London and mastered the violin and the piano. Dido began performing in various classical outlets until 1995, when she joined her brother, producer/DJ Rollo, to form the trip-hop group Faithless. The band's debut album Reverence went on to sell over 5 million copies, but Dido had already moved on to rendering her own compositions. Combining the techno sound of Faithless with a more acoustic and metaphysical sound, Dido was signed by Arista, where her solo debut No Angel was released in 1999. |
