| Kitsune are fox-spirits, capable of changing into
animal form. However, their animal form is easily distinguished from mere
animals by the number tails - only the most inexperience Kitsune have but one
tail, whereas the eldest have as much as nine (the number equals the Kitsune’s
character level, divided by two, rounded down). Kitsune are thought to act as
the messengers of the Kami, often bestowing gifts on those who follow the old
ways or carrying out poetic justice on those who have gained the interest of
the spirits. However, both gift and punishments are often double-edged and if
there is something all legends agree upon, it’s that the Kitsune are
unpredictable.
