CARTOON NETWORK EDITORIAL
I am writing this for one reason, and that is to express my opinion on cartoon network. This is my personal opinion, so don’t complain about it, or take it as though it is actually the voice of all, it is just one mans view on a channel.
As you all know, Cartoon Network are the people who air DBZ to the television community. Many individuals tune in worldwide to watch these episodes, and enjoy viewing them, receiving the enjoyment that is mandatory in a fantastic episode of my favourite program – DBZ.
Cartoon Network deliver quality programming, I don’t doubt that one bit. The episodes are on at a suitable time for just about any DBZ fanatic, and there is a rewind during the weekends, in the morning, for anyone to catch up on anything that they may have missed from the past weeks schedule. The advertising breaks in between the half way point of the episodes are slightly annoying, but can’t be helped as something as popular as DBZ is bound to be expensive for any television network. I believe that the adverts are nice and concise, not lasting too long, but just long enough to build up suspense, with the agonizing waiting to see what happens in the next scene, making DBZ even better. Whether this was intended or not, I don’t know, but it is a good effect.
The DBZ advertising is done well too, spanning it across different time zones, but mainly ones where fans of the show would be watching, generally between 5pm and 6pm. They encourage people to watch the program, and captivate even wider audiences. The previews do sometimes spoil the happenings of the next saga a little, but they are exciting to watch, especially if you have heard about them.
If I seem to like Cartoon Network so much, then why did I bother writing an editorial if I’m going to purely credit the channel? The answer is simple – I haven’t yet finished, and I am a long way from doing so. I am aiming to weigh up all the facts before I cast judgement, much like the ruler of a supreme court.
With all the high points finished, I shall make a start on the disappointingly dismal low points. This applies to England though, and if it relates with anything else, then it is purely coincidental.
I would like to say that although the DBZ advertising was good, there were many little glitches in it, such as the aforementioned spoiling of episodes, and terrible pronunciation of words that even my mom can say properly, and she is far from an Akira Toriyama fan. The word ‘Saiyan’ should be said as ‘Say-an’, whereas the voiceover in the commercial feels the need to say it as ‘Si-an’. Surely they must realize what an annoying deficit this is, as people tune in to the program everyday, they’ll notice this stupidity on the networks behalf. Would it have been so hard to simply research the lines that were written down for him to say? I think not, yet it wasn’t done, so it came across as slothful, half-hearted, and dreadfully done. Even 4-year olds would realize that they have got this incorrect.
Another pathetic anomaly of their behalf is the way that they handle advertising on other channels. I’m not contradicting myself here, but previously I had been commented on the advertising on Cartoon Network. How do they expect to attract new enthusiasts without risking paying the money required to put a few adverts on something like Sky One, Trouble, or Nickelodeon. This would make it appeal to a far superior audience, get higher ratings, and introduce people to the wonders of Akira Toriyama’s masterpiece. Due to their inadequacy though, this has not yet happened, and they quite simply deserve the low-ratings that they are likely to get, as kids programming is not enough, even great programming is not enough without advertising.
The thing that angers me most though, in Cartoon Networks arrogance. Their ignorance is possible to cope with if you simply bite your tongue, and attempt to ignore it, but how can they think that they can rerun sagas over and over again without people noticing? Not only did they decide to restart the Frieza saga in the middle of a crucial battle, where 3rd form Frieza was destroying Piccolo, but they also decided to only show a few new episodes after that. Maybe it was because they could only but a certain number of episodes, but I highly doubt it, due to the fact that we get the same episodes as American’s, and they are about two sagas ahead of us, meaning Cartoon Network did in fact have the episodes required. I can live with them rerunning the saga though, it is understandable if they didn’t want it to end immediately, and it had been running a fair long time anyway, so I suppose, although it is complete idiocy for them to do it, I can accept it. What I can’t accept though, is the way that they are currently rerunning the Frieza saga for the THIRD time in a row, in the break before the android saga. I have seen every single episode about three times now, and they are starting to get a bit boring. I can’t explain how much I am anticipating seeing Trunks and the androids fight each other, as I have witnessed the History of Trunks video, and loved every second of it. I cannot believe the inefficiency of such a well-known channel though. I would sincerely hope that they improve things soon, because I am seriously considering cancelling cable, and buying all of the episodes on video or DVD, as it would be far better.
Well, that is my opinion voiced. I don’t know if you agree with my current hatred of Cartoon Network, but you must concede that DBZ would probably be better suited to another channel, especially over here in England. Maybe if it was on Sky One, we could finally get that mythological unedited stuff, but that is a long way in the future at the moment, and I suppose we will have to deal with them as it is for the time being, as they are out only source of Dragonball, to satisfy the lust that we all share.
