BOY'S WINTER TRACK

HEAD COACH: JOHN GRUBE

Coach Grube enters his 22 year as U.D. Head Winter Track coach with 30 years of coaching experience ranging from the C.Y.O. and Junior High programs to the Olympic trials. He took over the reigns of the U.D. program in 1978 with 16 boys and 4 girls in the program. He has watched the program grow to an average of 8o participants each year. He is also the head coach of the U. D. Boys spring program.

This season has the average mix of veterans and "new boys". This years' team seems to have a good group of sprinters and middle distance runners, but the distance group seems to lack depth. Coach Grube isn't concerned because he knows that the younger runners will rise to the occasion and fill the vacuum.

Coach Grube lives in Drexel Hill with his wife, Betty. All four of their children: Rebecca, David, Beth and Michael all had outstanding careers at Upper Darby. He enjoys spending time with his graddaughter Makayla, Rebecca's daughter.

He lists his most exciting experiences in his coaching career as: the 1991 Indoor National Scholastic Championships when he coached Rebecca to the 1991 National Penthalon Championship and the 1996 Olympic Trails when he coached Rebecca to a 13th place finish in the Hepthalon.
