THE PARK: General Impressions. +4
I love this park! The location is wonderful, and the place is
really...classy in its own way. It has a lot of character, which really
adds to the experience. Last visit I walked away impressed, but only by
the rest of the park (not by the coasters). It's still mostly the
non-coaster parts of the park that I love; the Sally Dark Ride is one of
the most fun rides I've ever encountered, and the Double Shot is
wonderful. But Cornball Express really blew me away! I've heard it said
before and now I really believe it - Hoosier Hurricane is the family
coaster that's supposed to be a thriller, and Cornball is the thriller
that's supposed to be a family coaster. If you haven't seen any pictures
of this thing, I've included some links in my review. I believe Adam's
site also has some great pictures. Here's my
thoughts on Cornball:
CORNBALL EXPRESS - 2001 CCI "Family" steel-structured wooden coaster with
PTC trains. +5
As is, this coaster is absolutely perfect. As I said above, I cannot
believe this thing was meant to be a family coaster! Not only is there
airtime on every single drop, but it's violent airtime, right up until
the dip into the brakes. The helix is a bit slow, but I'm not into
really fast, strong G-force helices. And the location is beautiful. The
ride starts off with a wicked first drop that throws you into the air, and then
it's immediately up and to the left for another nice (but more tame)
drop. Up and to the left again, and into the best drop on the ride - a
very large fall almost to the surface of the lake below. Here, the odd
support structure (which is positioned above the track) provides
excellent hand choppers. The train
rushes up again and into the support structure of the Hoosier Hurricane,
where the train makes a sharp, unbanked turn to the left. Then there's
another airtime drop, which curves to the left near the bottom, barely
clearing the brake run (another great hand chopper). Then it's
up and into the right-hand helix, which gives time to take a breath while
providing enough laterals to be fun. Finally, the ride hits a hard run
home, with two more awesome drops. This is, without a doubt in my
mind, the best wooden coaster built this year, if not the best coaster
built this year period. This alone is worth a trip to Indiana Beach,
though while you're there make sure to get on the Double Shot and the
Sally dark ride. :-)
