Flagler College was originally the Ponce deLeon Hotel, built by Henry Morrison Flagler in 1888.. Ponce deLeon = Prince of Lions.
The Ponce deLeon Hotel was built because Henry Flagler wanted to show his friends and family the wonders he had discovered in Florida. It was the very first hotel in Florida. The rooms were assigned to his guests "gratis" and was never a money maker. Later Mr. Flagler expanded and built hotels in Miami, West Palm Beach and Key West and was instrumental in the development of those areas and the railroads to those areas. As Flagler College it is open for tourism only during the summer months. It is used as dormitories for the students during school terms. Only the "brightest" students are admitted to Flagler College and all have jobs awaiting upon graduation. Thanks to the Flagler endowment, it is the least expensive four year college to attend.
Left Flagler Memorial Presbyterian Church was built on the corner of Valencia and Sevilla Streets in 1889 in memory of his beloved daughter, Jennie Louise, who became ill and died in 1889. The church was dedicated to the Glory of God on March 16, 1890 by the congregation of the First Presbyterian Church of Saint Augustine which was originally organized in 1824. A fine example of Venetian Renaissance architecture, the dome of this impressive building is more than one hundred feet in height and is topped by a Greek cross that rises twenty feet above the dome. Henry Flagler was laid to rest in 1913 with other family members in the Flagler mausoleum adjacent to the Southwest corner of the church. The gardens and grounds were given to the church in 1968 by Jean Flagler Mathews, grand-daughter of Henry.
