Movie Reviews by the Professionals:

Roger Ebert
"54 *** Mike Myers' shrewd, wicked turn as the owner of New York's Studio 54 helps lift this generous-spirited tale of '70s excess above plot cliches."

This movie was so pathetic  even Ebert only had a minute to devote to it!

My Review: (reviewed 9-5-98)

The only disco ball you will see  from this film is from my review of it.  The movie was  weak through and through. There was no  character development.  This film is about debauchery,  decadence and nothing at all valuing the  music or dance from the days of disco.

Ryan (Shane) is an up and coming Leonardo Di Caprio, however  using this movie as a vehicle to propell himself into other weighty roles was a poor choice indeed.

Mike Meyers plays Steve Rubell, owner of the famed Studio 54 Disco.  First of all I personally have disgust for anyone that uses recreational drugs  and apparently Steve Rubell could only navigate the world through a haze of drug induced stupors.  Mike played this character so well-  I hated him and now I am glad I never made it to Studio 54.

Salma Hayek must have gotten this part  for her body and ability to wear a number of different wigs well. She has no singing talent .

Sela Ward  who I have loved her work previously played a role I think befitting her acting talent.

This 54 is anything but gltizy and glamourous and there was perhaps 5 minutes  of disco music throughout the entire movie. and no real disco partners dancing.  This was a movie about sex, drugs (lots of them) and greed.  No value to this movie in my opinion even in the price of filmstock.

My Rating: I give it 1/2 platform shoe rating and non-functioning disco ball
