About Cat's Age

What is geriatric cat?
Cats, in general, live longer and age more gracefully
than most dogs. An average life span might be
12 to 14 years, with some cats reaching 20 and more.
So, at what point do we consider them elderly?

The general consensus is that at about age seven a cat can be
considered "middle-aged", and at age 10 and beyond "geriatric".
Many factors affect your cat's life span.

GENETICS:

As with people, heredity plays an important role in determining life span. Most purebreeds are shorter-lived than mixed breeds. In addition, some individual cat "families" are longer-lived than others.

FEEDING:

One of the most important factors in longevity is proper nutrition . By beginning with sound feeding of a 100% nutritionally complete commercial food when your cat is a kitten, and continuing throughout his life, you can significantly lengthen his life.Quality of food remain high.Water should always be provided free-choice.

ENVIRONMENT:

Keep cat's living areas clean, dry and warm. Many older cats appreciate having a special area, quiet, private and easy to get to, for rest and relaxation. Any changes in their surroundings need to be made slowly and smoothly to avoid upsetting the cat.

VETERINARY CARE:

During a cat's life, his system under goes many changes. As he ages, his metabolism slows, he becomes more susceptible to illness and disease, and he becomes less active. He's less able to handle stress, internal or external. He changes physically: becoming grey, appearing "bony", eyes appearing cloudy. His senses may dull. He may become short-tempered, and more set in his ways. When problems arise, early detection and treatment can make all the difference. Follow your veterinarian's advice. At this point, your cat needs extra care and consideration.

EXERCISE:

Exercise is important to help maintain good muscle tone, increase circulation and improve digestion. Most older cats enjoy play in moderation. Encourage him when he's interested, quit when he's tired.

STRESS:

An older cat under stress is a cat whose susceptibility to illness is increased. Be sensitive to your cat's moods and preferences, and abide by them whenever possible.(This may not be the best time to board your cat or add a new kitten to your household.) The key is to avoid, or at least minimize stress as mush as you can.

ATTENTION:

Many older cats appreciate extra affection from their special people. This extra time together will make both of you feel good, and may help you to spot any changes or problems earlier.Keep track of his eating habits, elimination behavior and physical appearance. Be gentle. Handle him with sensitivity and dignity.
