<Tamesha> Ok, Crowe.
<Weatherman> not likly unless you have a registry opdate
   happening at the same time
<geewiz> ok, thx
<Tamesha> Gee, it just shuts you down...
<Weatherman> the registry can be damaged and windwos will say
   that the registry is
<Weatherman> corrupted and must reload from a backup.
<geewiz> I find if I clean out my email, delete old stuff, it
   runs better
<Tamesha> Don'tcha just love that.
<geewiz> LOL
<Weatherman> How much free space do you have left on your hard
   drive?
<Crowe> always empty trash and caches before shut down
<theark> me too crowe
<geewiz> I am at 73% free
<Tamesha> good idea..
<Tamesha> me too, trying to get the dang zip drive issue
   resolved
<Crowe> forgot about it a few times...wow what a mess!
<geewiz> I empty now before shutdown as well
<Tamesha> before installing Office 97
* Carrie needs more memory
<Weatherman> sometimes the problem can occur when hard drive
space is less than 20 Megabytes
<geewiz> ok
> Tell us again about your zip drive :)
<geewiz> Office 97 was a hassle to install
<Tamesha> Ok..in a nutshell
<Tamesha> Had to Emergency Restore after ISP gave me bad advice

<Tamesha> Registry is OK
<Weatherman> When you restored with the emergency boot disk,

<Tamesha> or clean Re-install of OS
<Weatherman> OK, the Iomega original disks, what version of zip
   driver
<Tamesha> 4.0
<Tamesha> 96
<Tamesha> The idiots at iomega are amazed that I know
<Tamesha> where the device properties are.
<Tamesha> I told them I used to test their drives...
<Tamesha> made 'em nervous
> hahahahaha
<Weatherman> Do you see under the system folder 'Other Devices'
<Tamesha> I did, blew up a couple of Jaz drives

<Tamesha> Weatherman...that is not an option..I don't even see
   it listed
<Marie-NC> Is this a moderated q & a?
<geewiz> not yet
<Weatherman> You have to use windows explorer and follow the
directory tree. Its not in device mgr
<oriole> nope... nothing disruptive Marie. If it gets out of control,
  it will be
<Marie-NC> do you let us know when the next question can be
   asked?
<Weatherman> anytime, I can multitask
<oriole> hahahahaha
<geewiz> LOL
<Tamesha> I'll use file find here real quick...standby
<Marie-NC> now how did I know that?
<Weatherman> ok
<Crowe> another ???
<Weatherman> ok, go ahead
<Marie-NC> Which is best Weathermn IDE or SCSI harddrive?
<oriole> the best weatherman is my weatherman! hahahahaha!
<Weatherman> SCSI is far superior to IDE if you use the right
   controller
<Marie-NC> LOL!!!!
<theark> lol ori
<may> lol
<romantique> LOL ori!!
<Marie-NC> what's the difference?
<Tamesha> I know...why I didn't by SCSI is beyond me!
<Crowe> directions to tell the pc to use the available port
when there is a conflict ie. between scanner and another
   device
<Tamesha> There're all over
<Weatherman> SCSI transfer rates are about 10 times faster than
   IDE and drive capacity
<Marie-NC> thx
<Tamesha> Yep...
<Weatherman> is just about unlimited. Any high end server uses
   SCSI and NOT IDE
<Tamesha> I'm sellin
<Marie-NC> thx
<Tamesha> this thing and getting a SCSI
<Tamesha> Or could I just by the SCSI controller card and add
   it???
<oriole> crowe - saw your ?... stand by a min please
<Crowe> ok
<Crowe> resolve Tam's
<Marie-NC> Which is better? K6 AMD 233 mhz or pentium 233 mhz
   mmx?
<Weatherman> If you add a SCSI controller card, get an ADAPTEC
PCI PnP, the zip will see it
<Weatherman> automatically and work fine
<Weatherman> but before you do that Download from iomega ZIP
   tools vers 5.52
<oriole> let's get back to crow's first :)
<Tamesha> OK...that was my next question....
<geewiz> :(
<Tamesha> do I have the current drivers....apparantely NOT
> no tam, those are two versions ago. You have to hunt for them
on their bbs, they have em buried
<Tamesha> as a tech support person, that would be the FIRST
   thing I'd ask.
<Crowe> gee did you want to ask one first?
<Tamesha> those lamers at iomega...jeeeze
<geewiz> Nono, I just was sad that red got pushed out
<geewiz> sorry
<Weatherman> A conflict between two devices is common since the
   amout of resources
<Crowe> oh ojk didn't want to be pushy ;)
<geewiz> np
<Weatherman> unfortunalty is fixed. When you have a conflict
it is a hardware problem and
<Weatherman> most likely can not be redirected by software.
   You must resolve the confilct
<Crowe> problem:....
<Tamesha> I hate that I hate that...as long as it's not firmware
<Weatherman> first before any software fix will work :(
<Tamesha> OK..thanx
<Crowe> installed program for embroidery machine
<Weatherman> What type of confict are you having
<Crowe> went in ok
<Crowe> then had crash
> and?
<Tamesha> It's just the drive dissapears and reappears from my
   computer
<Crowe> reinstalled OS w95
<Tamesha> are you asking me or crowe?
<Crowe> installed scanner--worked fine
<Tamesha> never mind...I see.
<Crowe> got new pc
<Crowe> installed EM
<Crowe> went in ok
<Crowe> then installed scanner --won't work
<Crowe> seems like which ever one goes in first gets dibs
<Tamesha> Crowe are you EPP? I'm sure
<Weatherman> ok, first, what type of scanner?
<Crowe> yes EPP
<Tamesha> OK..good
<Crowe> ImageReader plug in
<Tamesha> Plug and Pray????
<Weatherman> you are right about first in gets first dibs, but
there is a way around it
<Crowe> now getting calibration error
<Crowe> available port is 11
<Weatherman> the parallel scanners all have the same problem,
the twain driver must be installed
<Weatherman> TWICE, the first time with the software, and then
   again after the additional
<Crowe> then both will work?
*** Parts: Carrie (~beth@mor-nj1-07.ix.netcom.com)

<Tamesha> jeeze..carrie
<Crowe> she had a lot to offer
<navydog> go to the threads carrie!
<may> bye carrie!!
<geewiz> well, we know what that was all about
<Crowe> instalation of scanner indicated that the twain driver
   was being installed
<theark> maybe she misunderstoof what tonight was about...but i
   do not know how
<geewiz> It's the sharks against the jets
<navydog> it was well advertised.
<jamie88> i wouldn't let it bother me.
<geewiz> forget it
<sjack> are we the sharks or the jets?
<Weatherman> yes, but it must be installed again. Just spent 2
hours today on a P/P scanner
<jamie88> lol
<oriole> hahahahaha, shirl!
<Weatherman> with the same problem
<Tamesha> I say cut her
<geewiz> We are the good guys
<Crowe> ok but how can that be done when it seems to be part of
   the original installation CD?
<Crowe> do i need something else?
<Weatherman> Run the CD setup again, after all the other TWAIN
   devices are installed.
<geewiz> May I interrupt, weatherman, does that mean all
scanners that piggyback, wil need al this extra care?
<Weatherman> You may need an additional driver from the mfg.
<Tamesha> Sounds like SCSI is the way to go here.
<Weatherman> Most scanners that piggyback the parallel port,
   especially the paragon and
<geewiz> That's what I was afraid of
<Weatherman> mustek brand will require a little TLC. Sorry
<Crowe> is this due to there being 2 devices and it would be ok
   if no other ?
<Tamesha> Mustek is what QVC offered as TSV!
<Tamesha> I bet tons are flying back
<Weatherman> no, the TWAIN standard came out long before WIN95
   and has this limitation
<geewiz> Yes, the Scanport 2000
<Crowe> the printer that is supposed to plug into scanner
didn't want to work right so..
<Crowe> i got a data switch for that problem
<Weatherman> The mustek is a great unit, if you have the
patients to get it to work.
<Marie-NC> we have a mustek
<Tamesha> WM...most QVC'rs don't know where the power switch is
<oriole> so do we
<geewiz> Weatherman I love you, you saved me!! I bought, read
up on, but did not install until this night's seminar
<oriole> that's one of the reasons we made this the first meeting
<oriole> so if anyone had that tsv they could ask questions
<geewiz> I am indebted for life
<geewiz> LOL
<oriole> hahahahaha
<oriole> Marie, you had a ??
<geewiz> Will send back piggy back no UPS
<Marie-NC> yes
<Marie-NC> Which is better? K6 AMD 233 mhz or pentium 233 mhz
   mmx?
<Weatherman> strickly speaking the p233 and k6 are about equal.
   Depends upon what you use
<Weatherman> as a bench mark for testing the speed. Personally
I would buy the Pentinu II 266
<Marie-NC> how about to use for 3D?
<Weatherman> much faster than both
<oriole> Pentium II
<Marie-NC> I'm looking for a 233
<oriole> big shot! <g>
<Tamesha> Marie consider Micron or Dell
<Weatherman> Intel is cutting the PII 56% next month, should be
about $650 for a new board
<Crowe> How about Gateway?
<Weatherman> NO GATEWAY
<Marie-NC> thx W!
<Tamesha> No Gateway MOOOO
<Crowe> why?
<geewiz> ditto
<Weatherman> Their service is the worst in the business, and
   most of the parts are
<Tamesha> Gateway has hardware conflicts sometimes
<Tamesha> Monitors stink too
<Weatherman> propriatory to gateway. When you need a part you
must go back to them and enjoy
<Tamesha> Video card wierdness
<Weatherman> the hosing that you get from them
<geewiz> Ouch
<Weatherman> Micron makes a good system, a little over priced
   but very good quality
<Crowe> ok thanks..daughter was going to get one from them
because she used them to set up a business configuration for
   a business
<Crowe> lady she was helping
<Tamesha> Micron Dell and Compaq are rated top three....
<Weatherman> They used to be a US company with US parts, but
   now it Taiwan like everyone
<Weatherman> else
<Tamesha> Compaq..I dunno though, but mine has been pretty good.
<Weatherman> Personally, I buy clones, Better prices, good
parts and disposable when they break
<Marie-NC> Which was better for 3D graphics the k6 or the
   pentium?
<oriole> neither
<oriole> the Pentium II
<Marie-NC> ok
<Tamesha> Matrox Millineum video cards get 'em
<oriole> yeah!
<Tamesha> They kick butt!
<Tamesha> I like the "on the fly" features too.
<Weatherman> Matrox card are absoulutly the best I have ever
   seen.
<Tamesha> WM...Do you think NEC Multisync's are best for
   monitors?
<Tamesha> Marie is a webmaster deluxe..so she needs at least
   17" good one I'd think
<Weatherman> NEC or SONY best monitors for graphics. Good low
end is MAG innovision with the triniton tube
<oriole> I heard Fred was 17" <vbg>
<theark> LOL!!!
<Tamesha> maybe 21"
<geewiz> weatherman, dumb ? I stil have old arche monitor, if
   I upgrade, what is best?
<Marie-NC> LOL!! He is reading and says YES
<Tamesha> I won't go there!
<oriole> hahahahahaha
<may> hmmmmmm
<theark> Hi Fred
<Marie-NC> he says hi
<Tamesha> Fred..thought you were dead!
<Weatherman> gee, a good monitor from teh arche, would be
   either a mag Innovision 15" or a Digiview 15
<geewiz> any trouble in installing either of those?
<Weatherman> can get them usually for under $200 and the
   resolution is good
<Weatherman> No Problem, Plug and Go ( Not even Plug and Pray )
<Tamesha> Did anyone get your Monitor class action lawsuit
   info???
<Weatherman> Yes Not worth the time to fill out the paperwork
<Tamesha> 6 bucks!
<Weatherman> only ge $6.00 back if you are not upgrading your
   monitor
<Weatherman> $13 if you buy a new one
<geewiz> Thx weatherman, that is good news!!!
<Crowe> 6883
<oriole> anyone else have a question?
<Crowe> new #
<oriole> not mine :(
<Marie-NC> not I
<theark> not mine either
<sjack> i've got one
<geewiz> Ori, I think I have my ? answered with scsi board
<oriole> go ahead shirl :)
<geewiz> But for anyone else who bought Scanport scanner

<sjack> i've been thinking about upgrading modem.
<Tamesha> Ok..I gotta netscape one
<theark> hi jamie
<geewiz> I am sending back without installing
<Marie-NC> hi jamie
<sjack> Better internal or external?
<oriole> hold on, tam
<Tamesha> k
<sjack> Or should I wait til 52K standards?
<oriole> Best thing to do is buy US Robotics, get the 33.6, it's fully
  upgradable
<oriole> and go internal
<Crowe> why?
<sjack> is internal hard to install - get nervous opening box
<Tamesha> definately,
<Tamesha> make sure it's data/faxt oo
<oriole> and hope you have a good, clean phone line cuz 56K won't work
  on a dirty line
<Tamesha> too
<theark> neither will a 28.8 hehehe
<Weatherman> The USR modem just plug in. No Problem, Installed
   at least 100 of them
<Tamesha> jeeze we got line probs here...
<theark> me too
<sjack> how do you know if you have a clean line?
<Tamesha> you could pay about 200 bucks for line filter
<geewiz> gross
<Weatherman> I your modem reliably connects at 28.8 or higher,
   the line is usually good.
<Tamesha> looks like a UPC power supply
<theark> no thnks Tam.... I will cuss
<Weatherman> You can have the phone co. check it, but most of
the time they will say its ok
<sjack> mines usually connects at 26400 - does that mean a
   dirty line?
<Tamesha> kinda thingy that is...
<Weatherman> the only realy way to know is to see how it works.
<sjack> ok thanks
<Weatherman> No necessarly, could be your setting is not
   correct for the modem
<Tamesha> or go ISDN if you got it in your area
<Weatherman> Do you ever connect at speed higher than 26.4
<Tamesha> too pricey for me
<sjack> only seen it once
<theark> But what if your connection speed reduces all of a
sudden and you have not changed anything?
<Weatherman> may be the ISP. If they have too much traffic for
   their servers they will
<Weatherman> slow down the incomming modems.
<sjack> is isdn speed faster enough to be worth it
<Tamesha> YES..this is very true ask America Offline
<theark> Weatherman...that is what I thought...thanks
<Weatherman> yes, only if your ISP supports it. and you can
afford to use both B channels
<Crowe> lol
<sjack> dumb question - what's a B channel?
<oriole> ISDN has 3 phone lines on one package
<Tamesha> oops...bb later..hubster is home...gotta fireup the
   microwave
<Crowe> what will be involved in getting set up on ISDN?
<Tamesha> ttyl soon....
<oriole> bye tam!
<Marie-NC> bye tam
*** Parts: Tamesha (tamesha@lts4-121.snlo.dialup.fix.net)
<oriole> the D channel, or data channel, and two B channels - both 56K
  wide
<oriole> so a B channel is effectively one phone line
<oriole> that can be strung together to get 128k/sec
<oriole> when you connect your isdn modem, it comes w/two B channels.
They charge you more to come in on two B channels
<Crowe> will that give you 2 phone lines like regular 2 phone
   numbers?
<oriole> yep
<Crowe> plus?
<oriole> plus nothing
<oriole> hahahahahaha
<theark> that gives the telemarketers 2 more numbers to call
   and get a busy signal'
<Crowe> reg phone lines are??? A??
<Weatherman> ISDN is fast, but nowhere near as fast as a cable
   modem or satellite link
<oriole> yes, gail
<Crowe> noisy.right?
<geewiz> Weatherman, what is a La
<geewiz> LAN line?
<Crowe> what about the cable set up
<Weatherman> Gee, are you talking about a leased line such as a
   Fractional T or T-1
<Crowe> oops sorry
<geewiz> They are not available everywhere
<oriole> cable modems aren't avail everywhere. If they are, they give
  you T-1 speed
<geewiz> But do we want to get involved in those when they do
   become available?
<oriole> 5.4 megabytes/sec
<oriole> click and it's there, no world wide wait
<geewiz> So, "It's a good thing?"
<sjack> so would this be available through cable TV co when it
   becomes available?
<Weatherman> yes and no. There is something about the cable
co, getting involved with ISP that I dont trust
<geewiz> Neither do I
<Crowe> re: shirley's orig. question.. to update speed which do
we hope will be available and be best choice?
<Weatherman> There is a new co. that just filed for FCC
approval to use a 6" satellite
<Weatherman> dish for true T3 speed to the desk top for
$14.99/Mo after you buy the dish for $300
<geewiz> Wow
<Weatherman> that will be 45Megabytes a second.
<Crowe> ummmmmmmmm next choice?
<oriole> we're living with what we have til the satcom comes out
<sjack> is satcom the 6 " dish?
<oriole> yes
<Weatherman> I already put my name on the list for the first
dish that comes off the assembly line
<Crowe> lol
<oriole> this is gonna cost us how much??
<geewiz> Will wait for that review
<Weatherman> $14/mo plus $300 for dish
<Crowe> is this the same kind of dish that brings TV too?!
<oriole> Merry Christmas, Weatherman!
<sjack> would that be available for renters
<Weatherman> No
<Marie-NC> LOL!
<may> lol
<geewiz> From everyone at the QVCChat room!!
<theark> LOL ori
<oriole> hahahahaha
<may> hehehe
<Weatherman> Yes the dish will work for renters if you can see
   the South western sky
<theark> that lets me out
<geewiz> Now we need to know astronomy
<sjack> ok, is $14/ mo for unlimited use or do you still need
   an ISP?
<may> geewiz!
<Crowe> but not for TV only phone connection
<Weatherman> No thats the whole ball of wax
<sjack> sounds like you would make up the $300 within a few
   years
<geewiz> So ISPs will become obsolute??
<Weatherman> they are field testing right now in Manhattan
<sjack> does satcom have a website so I can keep track of this?
<oriole> they won't become obsolete, they'll just have to figure out a
  faster way to move data
<geewiz> This is truly amazing
<Crowe> considering the rate at which the fashions arive here
we ought to get that in about 6yurs!
<may> hahaha
<Crowe> from NY to Fl
<geewiz> My son will need to update his isp, Global 2000
<Weatherman> not yet. I read about it in Wireless World. They
are a startup co, not even listed on stock market yet
<Crowe> how much will the stock be?!!!!
<geewiz> How exciting to watch all of this
<theark> that was going to be my question
<oriole> they already applied to the FCC for a license
<Crowe> where will it be listed
<Crowe> put me in for some
<oriole> does he look like Ivan Boeski?

<may> not me :)
<Marie-NC> not I
<Weatherman> not at all, the Dr. is in.
<geewiz> go for it
<sjack> I can scan pictures ok, but what can you do to fix the
pictures - take out some of the blurriness?
<oriole> Adope photoshop - if you could tolerate learning it
<oriole> and you can afford it... it's approx $700!
<sjack> i have Micrografx Picture Publisher & Paint Shop Pro
   right now
<oriole> they can't fix bluriness
<Weatherman> Is the bluriness from movement or from the quality
   of the picture
<sjack> how about taking out some shadows, etc.?
<sjack> picture looks ok as a 4x6, but it scans to a bigger
   image that looks blurry
<sjack> always seems to scan to a much larger image than the
   original
<Weatherman> the problem is not the picture but the
   interpolation the software uses to

<Weatherman> it the calculation is wrong, the images is blurry.
Not much that can be done
<Weatherman> to fix this
<sjack> Is Adobe really that much better?
<Weatherman> Photoshop is a great program, but it has an
   incredible learning curve.
<Weatherman> We use it in the office and our professional

<sjack> Does it have manuals or a help that help you get over
   that learning curve?

<oriole> re ark
<may> wb arkie
<Weatherman> The books that come with it stink but Que has a
book on adobe photoshop that is
<Weatherman> pretty good
<oriole> There are classes you could take for it, too
<theark> thx ori and may
<sjack> thanks
<oriole> next question?
<Crowe> ???
<theark> what are the steps to back up the system registry?
<Crowe> I have Adobe acrobat reader...what is it for?
<oriole> hold on, gail
<Crowe> oops
<theark> sorry
<Weatherman> Easy.. The registry is nothing more than a file
   stored on the windows directory
*** geewiz-away is now known as geewiz
<oriole> re wiz
<Marie-NC> wb gee
<theark> ok will look for it...is it called registry?
<may> wb wiz
<theark> wb gee
<Weatherman> the registry can be backed up onto disk or another
hard drive by doing the followin
<geewiz> thx all
<Weatherman> The registry is actually two files "SYSTEM.DAT"
   and "USER.DAT"
<geewiz> I am afraid of the registry, weatherman, should I be?
<Weatherman> they are hidden, system and read-only attributed
   files
<oriole> if you don't know what you're doing there wiz, YES
<Weatherman> The registry scares even Microsoft
<geewiz> that's what I thought
<theark> and Marie too
<Marie-NC> I backed mine up!
<geewiz> later, weatherman I have a story to tell about ms and
   registry
<Weatherman> If you are prepared you can save these files and
be ready for the next crash
<Weatherman> the following steps will back up your registry to
   another directory or hard disk
<theark> ok
<Weatherman> this will only work with win 95 and NOT NT
<theark> ok
<Weatherman> first start the Windows Exporer program...
   Start...Programs...Explorer
<Weatherman> Scroll down until you see the windows folder and
   double click on it

<Marie-NC> hi mari!
<oriole> hi mariner
<geewiz> hi mari
<Weatherman> then in the right hand box, scroll down until you
   see a file called SYSTEM.DAT
<geewiz> nice to see you
<romantique> hi mari
<mariner1> howdy all :)
<may> hi mari
<Weatherman> and click it once with left mouse button
<Weatherman> now scroll down until you see the file "USER.DAT"
<Weatherman> hold down the shift key and click it with the left
   mouse button. This selects
<Weatherman> the two registry files, now to copy them to
another drive press the right mouse
<Weatherman> button, select copy, and then select a directory
you want to copy them to,
<Weatherman> I put them in a folder called registry, usually on
   my zip drive
<Weatherman> This should protect you from "stuff happening"
<Marie-NC> when you d/l a new program do you need to do the
   registry again?
<theark> ok thanks will do that.. but later...have Mirc running
   on my zip drive now
<oriole> yes marie
<sjack> so what kind of "stuff" does it protect you from
<oriole> the blue screen of death <g>
<Marie-NC> make my day ori!
<mariner1> well all this puter talk is making me nauseated
hahahaha now I really feel inadaquate
<oriole> when you crash shirl (we all WILL eventually)
<Marie-NC> lol mari!!
<Weatherman> its not if Windows 95 is going to crap it when
<theark> Thanks Weatherman...appreciate the info
<geewiz> I have crashed and survived!!!
<Weatherman> your lucky... Most don't
<sjack> ok, I have a CD with all the original install stuff -
do I recover from that and then replace these 2 files?
<oriole> yep
<theark> Weatherman someone told me to reinstall Win95 at least
once a year...any particular reason why?
<geewiz> Good ?
<oriole> to keep you busy??
<oriole> Never reinstall it unless you need to
<theark> that is what i thought ori
<oriole> "ain't broke, don't fix it"
<theark> AMEN
<Marie-NC> ark a tech person tell you that??
<mariner1> sounds good to me :)
<sjack> so do I need to replace these 2 files or just use the
ones from the install CD after a crash?
<Crowe> what about defrag?
<theark> yes
<Marie-NC> figures
<theark> lol marie
<oriole> you replace the files that you backed up.. the CD first, then
  the 2 files
<sjack> thanks, ori
<oriole> my pleasure :)
<Weatherman> defrag... the jury is out on it... Some say that
it speeds up the machine. All I have read
<Weatherman> says that it does not. Win95 had built in
housekeeping that tries to keep the
<Weatherman> disk clean. When it works.. I defrag about once
every 6 months or when the
<Weatherman> drive is 30% or more fragmented. Less than 30% is
   a waste of time
<Weatherman> Dont defrag unless you are backed up... A power
drop or other problem will scramble
<Crowe> ok thanks
<Weatherman> the entire drive.
<geewiz> how do you know when the disk is 30% or more
   fragmented??
<geewiz> does it show up somewhere?
<theark> gee defrag will tell you how much the drive is
   fragmented
<geewiz> ok, I know where to look for that, thx
<Weatherman> Select My Computer, then right click on the drive
   letter and select properties
<theark> and give you the option to defrag or cancel
<geewiz> thx
<oriole> next?
<theark> i knew 1...hehe
<oriole> hahahahaha
<Crowe> Acrobat REader?
<Marie-NC> scan disk?
<Marie-NC> oops
<Crowe> go ahead Marie
<Marie-NC> no you asked that earlier so go ahead
<oriole> there are a lot of web sites that are disseminating info in
  PDF format
<Crowe> i think scan disk is more appropriate please
<oriole> acrobat reader is the only program that reads this
<geewiz> what is acrobat reader?
<geewiz> sorry
<oriole> a program, wiz - free
<geewiz> ok
<oriole> www.adobe.com
<Crowe> thanks---ok scan disk???
<Weatherman> what about it?
<Marie-NC> well I take no chances and do it every night
<Marie-NC> I know paranoid!!
<oriole> you think Fred has a disease?
<theark> what do you do with the files if it finds any and it
will not let you save it to disk?
<Marie-NC> YES
<oriole> a virus, in particular? LOL!
<Marie-NC> LOL
<Weatherman> I run scandisk weekly, and before I install any
   new software
<oriole> if it finds what, a virus?
<theark> no files
<theark> scan disk checks for bad sectors right?
[Marie-NC SOUND]
<Crowe> folks i have to leave...Weatherman, ori, ark
marie...thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with us.
<Weatherman> yes, along with many other internal disk file

<theark> but ori, what if it does?
<oriole> delete them, there's nothing you can do for them
<DiDi> Quite a crowd! I had an unexpected trip to the airport

<geewiz> delete??? That does not send them into cyber space??

<geewiz> What about shared files???
<Weatherman> is reporting there is not anything that can be
   done to preserve the file.
<oriole> never delete a shared file
<geewiz> That opens up a whole new question in my mind...shared
   files.
<oriole> what about em, wiz?
<geewiz> well....installiing and uninstalling, what if files
   are 'shared?'
<geewiz> How do you delete
<geewiz> ?
<oriole> if it's a shared file, it's best to leave it alone
<theark> and how do you know they are "shared"?
<geewiz> But doesn't that load up your hd?
<Marie-NC> ark they say it when you try to delete
<oriole> any DLL, OCX, GID or ODBC file is best left right where it was
<oriole> it'll warn you if it's shared and you try to delete them
<oriole> yes, it fills your HS
<oriole> HD, rather
<theark> ok thanks ori and marie
<oriole> one of the many wonderful things about windows
<oriole> next question?
<theark> aint that the truth
<geewiz> Wel, ok, but it seems some MS programs piggyback a lot
   of shared files
<oriole> yes, they do
<geewiz> ok
<oriole> Azzi, bnsf, rom, may? Questions?
<may> none here... :)
<Weatherman> Windows is an object oriented language, every tool
bar, button, text box is all
<Weatherman> generated by a DLL or OCX file and this "saves"
   the programmer some work
<Weatherman> but fills the hard drive real fast
<oriole> didi, mariner?
* DiDi doesn't know enough to figure out a question to ask. ;)
<Marie-NC> mari only wants to know about wallops
<romantique> lol
<may> didi...me too!!
<oriole> hahahahaha - it took me a year before I could even ask an
  intelligent question!
<DiDi> :)
<DiDi> I'm still using Windows 3.1 so you can see I'm not
   really "with it"
<oriole> why, didi?
<Marie-NC> This is not a question but the voice of experience
   never NEVER use CleanSweep
<DiDi> I have a fairly small hard drive...need to get a bigger
one...can't afford all the 32 bit apps to replace the 16 bit
   ones I'm running now.
<theark> Marie that was written up in a magazine I get not too
   long ago
<sjack> what's CleanSweep?
<Weatherman> It does just what its name says cleans your entire
   computer beyond hope
<oriole> hahahahaha
<theark> hehehehe
<Marie-NC> I freaked!
<sjack> why would you want to do that????
<geewiz> Good Grief
<Marie-NC> I got it back
<sjack> I prefer dirty systems!!!
<Weatherman> That also goes for partition magic, First Aid and
   PC-Medic all very dangerous
<theark> shirl, it is suppose to get rid of files that your
   system no longer uses
<Marie-NC> but it also gets rid of some you use
<theark> except that it gets rid of ones it uses
<Weatherman> Does a great job in cleaning the computer.
Usually have to reload the OS and all your programs
<theark> well.... guess it does what it advertises....hehe
<Marie-NC> luckily I didn't have to do that
<theark> that was a nightmare marie
