Intro:
In 1894, Labor Day became a national holiday to honor labor unions and the working man. It is celebrated annually, on the first Monday in September, with parades, picnics and family get-togethers.
In addition to celebrating Labor Day, most parents of school-age children give a few whoops and hollers to show their appreciation for the end of summer.
How about combining a baby shower with the day's events?
Invitation:
** Sent matted on Help Wanted ads or printed on the back of a time card.
**With attachments of a tiny tool, paint brush, pencil, or other symbols of a particular occupation
Dress Options:
**In leisure, outdoor active wear
**In the uniform or typical clothing for a specific job
Decor:
**Props representing different occupations
**Posters and banners promoting employment
**Flags and red, white and blue decor
Activities:
**Paper and pencil game: Match The Tool to the Job game
**Name-tag game: Jumbled word (tools and supplies) matches correct word
**Outdoor activities like sports and games
**Pitching in and helping with an assigned party task, kids and adults, too

Whether you plan your event with a theme or stick to the traditional scheme, try not to make too much work of it.

Trucker�s Taters
1 med. baking potato for each 8 snax
Seasoned salt, pepper & flour
Spray margarine
1. Cut each potato into 8 wedges
2. Put 1 TB flour, � Ts salt, dash of pepper for each potato in paper bag.
3. Shake potatoes in bag with flour mixture
4. Place on baking sheet
5. Spray with margarine
6. Bake at 375 for 35-40 minutes
Slushy Payroll Punch
Makes about 1 gallon.
3/4 C. sugar
7 C. water
1 12-oz. can frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed and undiluted
1 12-oz. can frozen orange juice concentrate, thawed and undiluted
1 6-oz. can frozen pineapple juice concentrate, thawed and undiluted
1 to 1/2 C. coconut liqueur
5 to 6 C. lemon-lime carbonated beverage, chilled
1. Combine sugar and water in a saucepan; bring to boil, stirring until
sugar dissolves.
2. Cool.
3. Add concentrates and liqueur, stirring well.
4. Pour mix into large freezer-safe container, and freeze.
5. To serve, spoon about 1 C. slush mixture into a cup and add 1/2 C. lemon-lime
beverage, stirring until slushy.
Serve in thermos top cups, if possible.
Factory Whistle Shooters

Lazy Apple-Nutty ALA Mode
Topping:
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 stick (1/2 cup) cold butter or margarine
(not spread) cut in small pieces
1/2 cup walnuts, chopped
Filling:
3 1/2 pounds Granny Smith apples
(6 to 7 large), peeled, cored and cut in
1/2 inch-thick wedges (10 cups)
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
Serves 8.
1. Heat oven to 400F. Have a 13- x 9-inch baking dish ready.
2. Put topping ingredients in a medium size bowl. Rub together with your fingers or stir with a fork until mixture resemble coarse crumbs.
3. Put filling ingredients in baking dish and stir to mix well.
4. Spread evenly, then sprinkle with topping.
5. Bake 35 to 40 minutes until fruit is tender and topping is crisp and lightly
browned.
6. Top with dessert topping or a scoop of ice cream
Food Service and Decorative Touches
1. Use old fashioned lunch pails, kid�s lunch boxes and pails as food serving containers on buffet table. Add thermos jugs for decor or function.
2. Set up saw horses and planks for serving stations.
3. Create a coffee break cart area.
4. Serve sandwiches in brown lunch bags.
5. Provide cafeteria trays for guests.
6. Print seating assignments or place cards on the back of a time card.
7. Display tools such as paint brushes, spatulas, of carpenter, plumber, auto mechanic, architects or other tradesmen.
8. Ditto for hard hats, hats worn by policemen, firemen, railroad engineers, medical masks, sports head gear.
9. Fashion flowers from occupational papers such as legal pads, blueprint paper, computer paper, wall paper, mixed with those made from the want ads for use in centerpieces or with stems wrapped around napkins as holders.
