For hotel reservations throughout the USA, my favorite resource is RoomFinders, USA (800) 473-7829, or 504-522-9234 outside the USA.
If you travel a lot, or will soon: maintain at least one traveling toiletry set! ARRIVING WITHOUT THOSE ITEMS CAN BE EXTREMELY ANNOYING.
Luggage is very important. Get the best quality that you can afford. Also: NEVER check in valuables. Keep them with your person if you want to see them on the other side. This includes medications. When you pass security stations, wait for the person before you to completely clear the station before you start unloading your valuables. If you are detained, someone else has the opportunity to simply walk away with your [or rather: yours no longer] items.

Sure, practicing pessimism can be awful; however, taking simple precautions can avoid some hazards. One example of this is safeguarding your documents against the eventuality of their loss or destruction. Have copies of your identification, medical, visa, and other documents made, and store those copies somewhere. Preferably, they should be stored with a Recorder, or in a safety deposit box, so that someone can obtain them for you, and furnish them to whichever persons who need them. If you are traveling internationally, this is extremely valuable.
Confirm with customs that you may leave the country's borders with the contents of your luggage. Many countries, including the USA, have strict import/export guidelines. For techno-purists, this includes 128-bit encryption technology. For souvenir tourists, this includes foods, beverages, and "local memorabilia" (such as coral, volcanic rocks, artifacts, and flora).
Ensure that everything you will arrive with is legal there. For those with prescribed Marijuana, this can include inter-state travel (to Nevada from California, Alaska, or Arizona).
