THE BARTEE FAMILY HISTORY PAGE

This page is dedicated to all the information that I have on the Bartee's, which by the way is a very difficult thing to find. Don't ask me why? But being married to one for 13 years and knowing the family for almost 18 years, you'd think that they'd be easy to find but let me tell you I think they purposely make it hard for me to find them. :) But it is fun and sometimes alittle aggrievating when I hit a dead end.

The original family name was BARTEAUX and has since been spelt several different ways. Other spellings are BARTEE, BARTIE, BARTY, BARTEAU and BARTO.

The old family occupations where farmers, carpenters and seamen.

Family Characteristics: Coloring: Olive to dark olive. Hair: Dark brown to black. Eyes: Dark brown to hazel. Large ears present in many of the BARTEE males and some of the females in the family. Fond of talking, they are tellers of tales and are able to hold conversations with almost anyone, on any conversational topic. Handsome, friendly and outgoing family members smile easily and are able to make friends wherever they go. The "Gypsy" Bartee males appear to have a sense of adventure, frequently moving from place to place, have a yen to see the world. Although hard working they are also dreamers, always having some plan in mind to better their lot in life. Most of the male members of the family married and had large families. They usually are strict fathers, having tempers that flare quickly and cool down just as quickly.

Family History: It is noted that in 1700, one Francis BARTEAU(male), who had been born in Paris, France, died in Flushing, New York. He had been married to Mary BARTEAU and they resided on Long Island, Flushing, New York prior to his death. In 1704 there is an early record of one Robert BARTEE(the first time the name is spelled in this manner)who resided in Portsmouth, Norfolk County, Virginia. This BARTEE may have been the earliest of our family to reside in the Colonies, and may have been the one to persuade the other family members to come to this country. Robert BARTEE died in 1711 in Portsmouth, Norfolk County, Virginia. It has not been determine the country of his birth or his date of birth.

In about 1757 several members of the family, using the name BARTEAUX, along with other Acadians, left Nova Scotia, after deciding not to swear allegiance to the King of England. Members of the family obtained passage to Norfolk County, Virginia and settled there. They were later forced out of Virginia and many moved to South Carolina. One early family member, Abraham BARTEE, settled in Jones County, Georgia(but it is known in which branch of the family he is in).

The information here was obtained by me through a family newsletter, which another family member had found in old newspaper files, marriage, birth and death records, census records of Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, Arkansas, Texas and Oklahoma. There where also some old military records(Civil War), property and tax records, cemetary records and some of the information was obtained by converstations with elderly members of the family.

On some of the old records that were obtained, such as the census records, the information is only as accurate as the census taker. The census takers frequently misspelled names, got ages of the children(and sometimes the sex of the children)into the records in incorrect manner. Sometimes a neighbor gave the information and "guessed" at the information that they furnished. Also record information could be incorrect, i.e.: Andrew P. BARTEE - Death Certificate - his father is shown as Charles, mother as Josephine. His mother was Jo Ellen and his father was Ciscero C.
