Wonderment
I wish these things a child may know:
Brown cattails that on tall stems grow,
Blue dragonflies that knit the air,
The speckled trout in his watery lair,
A harvest moon that fills the pane,
Wild violets by a country lane,
Peepers calling in the dusk,
Bursting corn in ripened husk,
Bright falling star that splits the night,
Honking geese in southward flight--
These things have left their mark on me,
A wish to learn and a wish to see
All of the mysterious things that be
A part of God's heaven on earth below;
I wish these things a child may know.
