My Miniball

The Miniball
This is a Miniball robot. It uses a simple 1381 solar engine, a pager motor and a small gearbox from a wind-up toy. The driveshaft is glued to the center of one side of the plastic ball, while the shaft on the other side pivots freely. The solar engine charges from a small solar cell on top of the gearbox/capacitor. When the solar engine discharges, it runs the pager motor/gearbox and causes the whole mechanical assembly to rotate. This throws the robot off balance and makes the ball roll off in a random direction.
Another view of the Miniball showing more detail. The Solar Engine is of the 1381 variety, made with surface-mount transistors and connected to the capacitor/solar cell/motor by part of an IC socket. The plastic ball was bought at a local craft shop. These balls are used to make custom-made Christmas ornaments. It had a loop molded on the outside of it to hang it ( this was easily cut off ).
