Thoughts on Gor and Roleplay |
||
I first came to Gor, specifically AOL GOR, in February of 1999. I think it is appropriate to give a little tribute to K peace K of the Kassar camp who brought me in from the other realm, thank god. ( miss you linda) She and I played for 3 months together, until her real life world took her away from me. I was interested in GOR for a long time before that. I had read the series up to number 14 when I was in Junior High and High school. I stopped reading them I remember, because they had offended my religious and so called "modern male" sensibilities. I can only imagine the intense and beautiful adolescence I missed but, such is life. [finds it difficult not to type :smiles: here]. So, even when I was merely wasting time in the realm, I would often pop in to the kajira rooms and watch. Once I began to play, as Q zander Q a rencer with delusions of granduer, I immediatly drew a connection between the books and the elements of myself that had been missing for so long. and so a new obsession was born so to speak. Zander, in true Bosk of Port Kar style, was collared rather then face death and has since been in exile among the rencer people. It was then that Xavier of Port Kar,(or The Larl)returned to Port Kar from his travels in the south , only to find the city full of beauracrats and cretins, but i digress. This page is designed to describe some of my philosophies on role play. At the time of this writing AOL gor seems a bit in turmoil, though that can be said often. The city of Koroba, for instance, seems to be some kind of abortion of Gor, spit out of the womb of ryhdin. Free women run around with swords, hardly anyone in that city seems to care that the game was actually based on a series of books etc. Now I am digressing again, as my point is not to point out the obvious but to offer some rules to live by in Gor that would improve our little world.
No.. dont do it.. you are smarter then that. The point of Role play is interactivity. Yes, when I see a Free Woman of Koroba approaching with her two handed long sword i cry a little, but I do not cry out in OOC( as much as i can help it, its so maddening!) The thing to do is to play them away. If you know the books start asking them questions about things and terms they will have no clue about. Or even better, why not make up some term and pretend its a real one IC. for example.. Oh so i see you are a Female Warrior with chain mail and a laser guided crossbow.. well did you know there is an entire clan of Free women warriors in the island of kantbothertabyabuk that are just like you?. why i think they need an empress! yes run off and find them. No dont do that thats just as bad. But you see what I am saying Keep it IC. Ok .. maybe that ignore button is easier but above all. do not go to the bubbles! Bringing me to Rule number two Some people, do not understand that this is a roleplay game, it is not a chatroom for discussion on the new Video game/wav/char pic/or interesting gossip non game related, you just got. Nor it is it the place to discuss the size of your chracters shlong unless that happens to be what i like to call "IN THE SCENE". Over and over people feel it is perfectly within the limits of the game to begin a discussion on some piece of information, either offered up by the thoughts of some character in some way, or by some ones comment which leads to the kind of aol nonsense that makes you wonder just how old these people are we are playing with. For example, I used to have all the respect in the world for a character and player called Caldar Dro, because i knew him to be a tuff master , or thought he was. However, over time i began to realise that this person was not going to public rooms to play the game but to simply have a place to talk to people who , by virtue of their playing the game , seem a captive audience. Amasingly , over and over, this person could not distinguish between the actions of characters and the action of their players. For instance, my character is a snobbish ass. this Caldar person took it upon themselves to go immediatly out of character and began to insist that all the insults stop right then and so on. Now please, if my character is insulting then be insulted WITH YOUR CHARACTER. Truly i do not really want to talk to you, the player, until i get to know you a little. Now, this is all to say that the inclusion of any action even the simple (wb) and (TY) in the game , is distracting to the atmosphere we are all trying to create as storytellers and that . brings me to Number Three
Something inside us all drives us to write, and more then that, it drives us to share that writing. We have a need to tell stories and more, to live them. To me, this speaks of our ancestral heritage of the oral tradition, the ghost story, the legend, the epic. We yearn, beyond our obvious attraction to the MAster slave fantasy, to share our visions. AOL gor has provided an incredible opportunity for this which we are barely making use of. The creation of virtual places in chatrooms is not simply a device of technology it is a creation of the mind. If the room name is a tavern , let us not simply enter and assume it. Let us instead paint the image with words. Take the room and draw it out , describe the shadows dont just slip into them, describe the way the room smells to your character, the bustle of the crowd for though a room may have two players in it Gor, is always there, around you, alive and vital. I have seen many players who do this, unfortunately, they are often so popular they become overwhelmed with followers. There is just one other thing i would like to just suggest. The structure of AOL rooms needs to be fixed somehow. I know that there is massive disagreement between various systmes, ghs angor sardar etc, but what if the number and names of rooms had to be applied for and distributed as would be real estate? Imagine if you would a structured set of rooms controlled by some automatic system or set of rules. This would make the means of travel much more static and force us to mix more. After all interactivity is key right? Well that ends this tirade for for the day. After reading rule one and two im not sure actually forcing people to mix is a good idea but its said and done. After all we pick who we play with for different reasons. I wish you all well. Please Send Mail to Xavier of Port KarHome | ||
