NEXT MEETING THIRD SATURDAY OF THE MONTH (August 21, 1999) 2 PM, SAME LOCATION

Sorry for the terse format of these minutes -- my holiday/vacation and the consequent makeup work (!) interfered somewhat, but I wanted to get something out ASAP. Also note that geocities has been acquired by Yahoo! - but address forwarding lets us keep same page and email address.

NEWS Robin Abrams leaves Palm Division to pursue other interests - marketing guy steps in. Not sure what this means.
Rumors of Steve Jobs/Apple seeking to acquire Palm division again circulate – will we see a translucent green and white Palm??? --- I thought this was a BAD thing at the meeting [I confess to being Wintel-centric] – but now I hear that the imac notebook has a "great" 2.4gHz wireless lan setup that involve a Pccard in the imac and a transceiver that acts to allow up to 10 roaming notebooks to access an ethernet/56k modem (as a hub, although that word is apparently not in Applease). So what? Well, apparently the Apple hub is FAST for this technology (2-3mbps is the word) - available "September". Unlike long distance wireless, 2.4gHz is free of access charges – it is portable phone stuff. I can see Pccards tacked to the back of PDAs, can you? (Even if they are green and white)
HARDWARE NOTE AND EMAIL QUESTIONS1. Could you tell me if the Palm II, Palm IIIX, and Palm V have expandable memory (...to 4MB, 6MB, etc.)?
A. Early (now obsolete) Palm 1000, 5000, PalmPilot Personal and PalmPilot Pro (128k, 512k, 512k, 1mb) models could be upgraded to a 2MB PalmIII, including PalmIII OS and infrared capability with a $50-100 card. This is what I now use - a PalmPilot Personal with 2MB upgrade. It is functionally equivalent in every way to a PalmIII. [Palm Pilot 2MB Upgrade Feature from MyPilot (as of 8/9/1999) http://www.mypilot.com/2MBupgrade.html ]
I am a little less clear about the newer models (PalmIIIx has 4MBstandard, Palm V has 4 or 8, I think). There is probably an "official"limit to memory expansion, and the biggest I recall seeing is 16MB.
Upgrading my palm V to a V8 http://www.interlog.com/~tcharron/Palm8M/PalmV8review.html
Technology Resource Group http://www.trgnet.com supplies a number of ways of boosting memory in a Palm OS environment and probably will bemore up to date. They have specialized in "3d party" addon memory.
BUT - keep in mind that even "only" 1 or 2 MB is used in a veryefficient manner under the Palm OS (unlike Win CE devices)and it is comparing "apples and oranges" to compare memory stats.
You can download an emulator from 3Com, the manufacturers of the Palm, and try it out on your desktop for free. The Palm OS emulator is available from 3Com.
2. Email from TJB was answered by himself – looking for conduits to sync two desktop programs – (We suggest a workaround that is less elegant: under Hotsync->Menu->Conduit Setup you can click which conduits to use in a hotsync. You might try deselecting one, hotsync, reverse the selection, hotsync again. Just a thought.)
I saw your web site on the web ring for Palm central. Pretty impressive. I am hoping you can help with my question. I am running Act! 4.02 and Outlook Express 4.0 fro E-mail. I have a Palm IIIx and have gone through the Act link, and Intellisynch with no luck. I am trying to synch up both Act and the email at once. both Inteillisynch and Act link take over the conduit controls and do not support outlook express. do you have any suggestions?
Very frustrating. TJB
A. This is a tough one for me to answer - since I personally do not use |either outlook or Act! "PalmPilot - The Ultimate Guide" by David Pogue |suggests that you "Spend an unusual amount of time with its Read Me |file" after installing Intellisync. He also suggests "PilotMirror" (no link given) as a conduit product that |syncs ONLY with MS Outlook.|I assume you are using Win95/98 on your desktop.
I'll look around a bit and make this a topic for next meeting.
If you find answer/workaround, let me know. Thanks. PUGSL
His solution :
I downloaded the Companion link demo.
I uninstalled all synching software, deleted remaining folders (if any) and rebooted.
I then installed hot synch from 3COM. I installed Companion Link and followed their wizard. I did a Hard Reset of the Palm IIIx. I corrected the triplicate records in Act, both the source records and the related triplicate activities. I then did a synch starting a new. Voila!
It worked like a charm. I promptly called
"Please call or email with any questions. I would love to help anyone save some to the three days I spent on this project. TJB" (CONTACT PUGSL FOR ADDRESS)
3. One member emailed a reference to Cult of the Palm Pilot – Good Funny Article!
TAP Magazine
http://www.tapmagazine.com graciously provided multiple copies of a "best of" review issue, which were distributed at the meeting.Avantgo was again mentioned as a way to download net content to the Palm (here, on a Palm V). Avantgo apparently doesn’t support cut and paste – again Windows workaround of Control C/X (copy/cut) and Control-V (paste) might work on desktop in a pinch.
We had an IR capable notebook at the meeting, and we tried (unsuccessfully) to connect via IR port of TI laptop to PalmIII using Penguin Backup and the SIR setup through the BIOS settings of the TI. This merely demonstrated the need to walk through these demos before a meeting, I guess. Looking back, I think the problem was using the "IRSync+" program instead of the regular hotsync, set up for IR instead of serial port. You need the upgrade for IR from 3Com website (free) to do this. IRSync+ has nothing to do with Penguin Backup, if I read all this right. We will try again --- and Wayne --- let’s do it!

Penguin:
(http://wwwipd.ira.uka.de/~witte/pilot/backup/)Penguin is based on a LINUX kernel and doesn’t even require a hard disk, It allows a complete backup of a compressed image of your installed programs to a single floppy (one for Penguin, one for backup). It also allows installation of single PRCs (Palm Programs) from a floppy source without a complete hotsync. These latter capabilities were demonstrated using a non-IR notebook at the meeting. Penguin continues to rate a "MUST HAVE" status in spite of our IRDA failure!
We talked briefly about database programs one frequent choice is "handbase 2.0", used for a library application by one user – who is getting close to running out of space. "Jfile" was mentioned as good for development. Perhaps one of these members would like to put together a more formal presentation?
Palmlaw site mentioned for law related applications and Docs: http://www.palmlaw.com
Playit was demoed for a tinny pathetic "Canyon" MIDI – but hey! It shows that the PalmPilot can and does play (albeit extremely limited) MIDI files!!!! Get the file from PalmCentral
Our favorite program of the meeting was Diddlebug. DiddleBug is like a small sketch pad on your Palm that you can easily set an alarm for. Just scribble something on the screen, then select a time from the popup list! Alarms can be shown as the alarm time or as a countdown. You can assign a hardware button to easily create a new, blank reminder for those hurried notes. DiddleBug is free to use licensed under the GNU GPL (Linux again). DiddleBug now has IntelliBooger(tm) extensions, with "pick-and-flick technology" that allows you to create entries within the built-in applications directly from within DiddleBug. (Description from PalmCentral).

POTENTIAL TOPICS AND MEETING FEATURES
Our email list will continue to be used to determine member’s interests in particular applications for future discussion. Even if you cannot attend, drop a note with what you want discussed and we will brainstorm to the best of our abilities and include it in these minutes. The web page will continue with the simple first page and follow a "low bandwidth" style.
If you get a chance, download and test "Abacus" spreadsheet - freeware, says it works with lotus WK1 sheets!!!!!!! Share your results with us at the next meeting.
One member indicated he had access to a VGA projector that would accept VGA port output for displaying the emulator image from the laptop for all to see -- this would be great!!!!
As always, meetings (and "membership" which implies that you are on the mail list and/or have been to at least one meeting) are free and open to the public, and any level of experience is completely welcome.
All trademarks and copyrights remain the property of the respective owners. No financial support or other inducements were received from any developer, manufacturer, or distributor of any product mentioned. Privacy of persons in attendance or corresponding by email is maintained to the extent reasonably possible and not collected for commercial use by PUGSL.
