January 2000 Meeting Notes

Previous meeting Minutes

Once again we have a positive reference for Palm Ultimate Guide, now in second edition. First editions are available at a discount at some local bookstores.

We had several demo copies (beta versions) of YODLEE to review prior to the meeting. This is a program that keeps track of numerous accounts, like stocks, bank accounts, frequent flier miles, and the like, and allows for updates to your Palm PDA. This looks like a very potent, powerful application with a high potential. We have some security concerns about any internet based apps, and were hesitant to endorse this product for all our bank accounts and stock holdings. We also we concerned that the program doesn't clearly identify any item that has been updated in the memo list. At any rate, you should check this out yourself if you have a lot of passwords and accounts to keep track on.

AVANTGO again is mentioned for a handy way of downloading information to your desktop and transferring it to your Palm device to read later. Like the Wall Street Jounral online edition?

Subscriptions to TAP magazine can be made through the Barnes and Noble website, according to one user. Apparently the also provide a weekly newsletter format in PDF as well

We continue to have interest in keyboards for the Palm, like the GOTYPE and the STOWAWAY although we have not seen the folding Stowaway in person. There apparently is a cradle adapter which allows PalmIII,V compatibility with these devices.

One of our VISOR users mentioned a 6-pak module from Innogear.

We continue to gear up for a Palm Programming Tutorial this year, although this is bound to be a major task. We still like Pendragon Forms for simple list programming, but will expand into C, C++ programming with the GCC programming environment available for free. Wademan has the best site for programming references. GCC is a linux/unix environment program, but with CYGWIN, you can run it under Windoz as well. The Palm site Developer's Zone has the necessary programs for download. Metrowerks CodeWarrior Lite is also free, but somewhat limited. It is available on many CDRoms included with PalmProgramming books.

RUMORS AND NEWS

A COLOR PALM? Rumor has it that 3.5 test builds of the PALMOS contain code that references 160x160x8 bit displays, which implies color to some of us. We don't know what the hardware will be though. News suggests that the Palm V is phasing out, with the Palm Vx becoming the best seller. (February 22, 2000 brought the Color Palm OS 3.5. March 2 brought the Palm IPO.) Xerox is pursuing the claim to the fundamental basis of Graffiti as their intellectual property.
