Squire Washington Horn

Squire W. Horn enlisted June 2, 1862 in the Virginia Confederate Cavalry and served in Co. C, 34th Battalion. He took oath June 9, 1865 at charleston WV. He filed a pension application at age 74. Mary Ann Compton died 2/11/1885 and is buried in the Ward Cemetery at Pilgrims Knob, VA.

Note: The 1860 Federal Census lists Thomas and Pauline as ages 3 and U/1 respectively. The 1870 Federal Census, while mentioning Hulda J., William L., and Alcy C., does not mention Thomas and Pauline.

The Pike County Court Orders Book show that in 1912 James T., applied for a confederate Soldiers Pension. This pension was payable to disabled and indigent Confederate Soldiers. James T. was 75 years old when this application was filed.

The 1910 Federal Census for Pike Co., KY., lists James T. as James Compton, Sr., age 74, Mary C. age 58, married for 23 years with 9 children. His address is Ford's Branch, KY. Mary C. (Katie) Sturgell Keathley was previously married to Yewel Keathley on February 24, 1869. Her age listed as 18, his as 21 years of age. Their marriage is recorded in Book 4, Page 157 in the Floyd Co., Court Clerk's Office.

The 1880 Federal Census of Floyd Co., KY., lists Mary Keathly as a 29 year old widowed head of household. Four children are also listed: John - age 12, Martha M. - age 8, Vaney F. - age 6, Mary M. - age 4.

Roscoe married third: Helen Conn
On their marriage license he is listed as 37 years old and a widower; she as 26 years old and single. There were children born from these marriages. Still seeking info on them.


71. John W Compton

John W. Compton was 2nd Sgt. of Co. B, 39th Regiment, Kentucy Infantry Volunteers. He enrolled on 14 November 1862 to serve 3 years during the war. Discharged for service to the United States 15 September 1865 at Louisville, KY. At enrollment he was 21 years ol, 5'6" tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair and a farmer. He is also shown as a member of the confederate Army in 1861 with his older brother James.
Descent is in Book 166 at page 572 (Children)
