John Compton I is one of three sons (including Ezekial and Abraham) of Isselstyne Compton, who married Aaltjie Blaaw (aka "Orchie Blue" in Hopewell NJ in 1720. (See Blalock for additional details). John first married Lydia Carhart and had a daughter Amy, and possibly others. After Lydia died, John married Margaret Raemer ca. 1755 (Comptonology, V. 2, No. 7, p. 31, whose family had left Germany in 1735, also to escape religious persecution. John Compton left New Jersey with Abraham Compton (relation uncertain, if any), and arrived in Augusta County Virginia by 1772. John and Abraham continued to migrate, and John bought land in Botetort County in 1775. Abraham served in the Revolutionary War, and was reportedly killed, (see Blalock) but compare the DAR Patriot Index, Centennial Ed., Pt. 1, p.634, which shows an Abraham b. ca. 1747 NJ, died in 1779 in VA, married to Mary Compton. In any event, John was killed by a falling tree limb in 1778. He and Margaret Raemer had eight issue, per Blalock, see infra. (Blalock says John Jr. went to Missouri, but the DAR Index and other records contradict this).

(1) Lydia Carhart bef. 1754, issue Amy and possibly others; m(2) Margaret Raemer 1756 (Comptonology, V. 1, No. 2, p. 4). It is reported they had ten children. Blalock and others report that John and Abraham went to Boutetrout VA in 1772. John bought 411 acres of land here on May 5, 1775.
Abraham Compton, per DAR b. ca. 1747 NJ, Served in the Continental Army as a private, d. 1779 VA--killed in Revolutionary War, m. Mary Compton. His genealogy also continues on and parallels this one into Southwest Virginia, principally Russell and Scott Counties. Mary remarried John Brickey after Abraham's death (Blalock). John Compton Brickey (a son?) is reportedly the author of an authoritative Compton genealogy which I am attempting to locate. See Comptonology, V. 3, No. 9, p. 121.
The relationship between John and Abraham is not certain. Both men migrated into Virginia together and their descendants spread throughout Southwest Virginia and are entertwined.

Per Blalock, a John Compton left NJ with his family and that of Abraham b. ca. 1750 and arrived in Augusta Co. Va in the fall of 1772.
John Compton bought 411 acres of land in Botetourt County VA on 4 May 1775 from John Mills. I have a copy of the recorded indenture.
Jeremiah was involved in the siege of Yorktown and the surrender of Cornwallis. Blalock has considerably more detail on Jeremiah and Elizabeth.
According to Blalock, Margaret Raemer remarried after John's death to William Aston, and was sued by son Joseph subsequently for a division of the Compton estate. There was also a sale of Botetourt Co. land from Joseph to William and Margaret Acton. I have Botetourt documentation supporting this theory.
Owned Land in 1790 in VA
Blalock says a Rev. War soldier, no record DAR. Reportedly received a Russell Co. land grant
