  2. 1001 Ways to be Romantic For all of us old folks who may have lost the art of romance and for the youngsters out there who need to learn this art, this site gives some good tips and ideas.
  3. ACTION ATLAS: CORAL REEFS Mother Jones magazine and the Coral Reef Alliance in Berkeley, California, have teamed up to put together this red alert site that calls attention to the Earth's troubled coral reefs. Armchair activists and serious crusaders alike will find oceans of information about where the current hot spots are and what they can do to help. Scientists are predicting that 70 percent of the world's reefs will be destroyed in 20 to 40 years unless we do something to stop it. This well-designed site is a good place to start.
  4. THE DOG HAUSE Did you know that if your cat nudges your feet in the morning, it wants to stay inside, and if it nudges your face, it wants to go out? That, and dozens more pearls of folk wisdom can be found at this site dedicated to pets and pet lovers. You'll also find jokes, helpful hints, essays, idioms, fonts, sound files, a kennel of links, and much more--all related to the animals that help make our lives a little more complete.
  5. GLOBAL COMMUNITY CENTER While many people focus only on themselves and their immediate surroundings, a small group of dedicated folks continues to think and act globally. Past projects include building housing projects in Iraq and wiring villages in Guatemala. Check out the group's official site for a look at what it has accomplished, what it stands for, and why it is different from many other assistance organizations.
  6. WWF CONSERVATION ACTION NETWORK We all love nature, right? But can you walk the walk when it comes to preserving the wildlife around us? Well, the task becomes easier when all that "the walk" requires is sending an e-mail. The World Wildlife Fund has organized this unique, grassroots-level approach to connecting concerned citizens with the congress representatives and legislators who hold the pens signing environment-damaging bills. Similar to Amnesty International's Urgent Actions, the WWF will send participants approximately one urgent environmental alert e-mail a month with e-mail addresses of the folks you should write to with your dissatisfaction.
  7. THE DIGITAL FREEDOM NETWORK While nations such as China struggle to maintain control over the Internet, a medium inherently anarchic, a group of concerned activists have launched this new site dedicated to people who have lost their freedom by expressing themselves and their opinions. What's more, the Digital Freedom Network publishes the material that got the individuals in trouble in the first place. Check out banned political cartoons, editorials, and articles from around the globe. Find out the latest hotspots for censorship and what you can do to combat suppression.

JAMAICA THINGS Jamaica, an island with an average temperature of over 80 degrees has given the world many things--Reggae music, some of the best coffee around, spices, hot sauce, and other fine pleasures. If you aren't lucky enough to be heading to the isle to pick up these treasures for yourself, this site can help.
  9. TRAVEL SMITH Sometimes a Web site will present us with so much information, so many purchasing options, that we say to ourselves, "Why bother leaving the house anymore?" You'll find packing lists, weather forecasts, travel accessories for men and women, U.S. Embassy information, travel agency listings, continents, and more, all that info is here to help you get out and go somewhere. An absolute bookmark for the casual, business, or adventure traveler.
  10. THE TECH MUSEUM "Wow, daddy! Look at the 5-1/4-inch floppy on that 286!" At the Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose, California, exclamations such as these might actually be commonplace. Check out the recently revamped official site of the museum, with profiles of revolutionaries, a PC Weblopedia, top sites, and scores of other online exhibits. Educators will love some of the sections geared especially to teachers, and students have plenty of interactive fare to keep them entertained as well. See how far technology has come--and take a peak at where it might be heading.
  11. ANALOG2DIGITAL Starting this year and continuing through 2002, all major TV signal providers will need to make the transition from analog to digital television. This resource helps clear up some of the confusion with culled news updates, standards schematics, discussion forums, and copious links. Cleverly designed and extensive, this site is a good resource for people with vested interests in the battle or who are considering plopping down the cash for a digital TV.
  12. TRUE HELPDESK AND TECH SUPPORT STORIES Read actual e-mails and phone call transcripts, and listen to recorded calls to help desks. Funny stuff, and it might make you go a little easier on the voice on the other end of the line next time you call tech support.
  13. NTERNET TRAFFIC REPORT Contemplating downloading the latest Netscape Communicator? Before you attempt to tow that 18-ton semi down the information superhighway, you'd better check the traffic report. The Internet Traffic Report is a helpful tool that enables you to determine how quickly data traffic is moving on the Internet in general or your area in particular. The results are graphically represented so they are easy to understand; they can tell you if the file from San Jose will speed along at a reasonable speed over the wires or if thousands of folks are currently online downloading the latest Star Wars video clip.
  14. WILMA: THE INTERNET GUIDE TO LIVE MUSIC WILMA is the place to go to find out if your favorite band is touring. What's more, you can attach favorite selections from WILMA's 17,000 bands and 2,000 metropolitan regions to your profile and get e-mail notification about upcoming shows. In addition, you can meet other people who share your musical preferences.

JEEEM'S CINEPAD A respected film critic and film historian, Jim Emerson has culled a sizable collection of interviews, reviews, commentary, and curios to create this vast and wonderfully idiosyncratic site. Guests are encouraged to visit various rooms (the site employs the common house metaphor) for the aforementioned content. Emerson has interviewed Bette Davis, Milos Forman, the Coen brothers, and many more. Check out his tribute to cinematic plumbing for some vitriolic writing. A goldmine for true cinephiles.
  16. FILM.COM Ever feel like throwing a shoe at the TV when movie critics pan a movie you adore, or worse, gush over a movie you abhor? Now, with the newly redesigned Film.com, you can issue the electronic equivalent of a brickbat or a bouquet to the movie of your choice. Read the professional critics' reviews or submit your own. In the preview section, you'll find streaming trailers of the latest flicks; and in the store, you can buy all the cinema paraphernalia your popcorn-greased hands can afford.
  17. GARDEN SOLUTIONS A site about sun, water, and dirt? Well, sort of. Foster and Gallagher, the huge catalog company specializing in garden goods sponsors this site aimed at gardeners who prefer their horticultural products straight up. What do we mean? While some garden sites pepper the product pitches with lifestyle articles, discussion forums, and the like, GS skips the BS and primarily offers one-stop, no-hassle ordering options on everything from bulbs to trees and the tools you'll need to plant both.
  18. CONTENTIOUS People do write online--and write well. If you're a print journalist considering taking the plunge into the world of virtual clips, you'll want to check this new site before you leap--and check back along the way. Put together by a freelance journalist, the monthly zine features editorials, interviews, examples of good and bad writing, and more.
  19. VIDEOSEEKER "Hey, did you see Jennifer Aniston on Conan last night?" How many times have you had to duck out of a conversation from the get-go because you didn't catch the reference? Well, if it's TV your friends are gabbin' about (specifically NBC TV), you don't need to be silent any longer. Enter Videoseeker, which houses selected clips from selected TV shows--available in streaming video. The first step toward user-defined show schedules? Could be. We give credit to NBC for listing non-NBC-affiliated sites under its news links section.
  20. CONDENET CURRENCY People are making a lot of money off the plethora of financial information sites available on the Internet. If you're wired, the amount of info available to you on how to manage your money is simply staggering. And CondeNet (a division of CondeNast) has joined the fray. Its advice is thoroug and the site offers a nice selection of lifestyle articles to balance out the hard number-crunching discussions. Scores of links, stock advice, financial calculators, and much more is to be found on this warmly designed site.
  21. PEZ.COM If you're one of the countless folks who feel a strong connection to these kitschy toys, you'll find collector information, company news, tips on limited edition releases, and more at the official site of Pez.
  22. Flirting for FunFlirts International is dedicated to the principle that flirting is a delightful, innocent, and respectful way to play with each other! Flirting is performed and perceived as a kind of compliment, an acknowledgement of the beauty and fun in each of us.

  30. April Fools is a site that allows you to fill out a Mad Libs-like scenario and have the official-looking results e-mailed to a friend (or victim) in the form of a Web site. Imagine your friend's horror when--upon following a link she's received in an enigmatic e-mail--she discovers she's been chosen to be the next Spice Girl. For all of us who can't get enough practical jokes done in one day!
  31. The Experience Music Project focuses specifically on the music of the Pacific Northwest, and that means Hendrix, the grunge movement, and much more. That translates online to exhaustive musical timelines and family trees, guitar exhibits, and a peek at some of the exclusive exhibits to debut next year. Just as you wouldn't rush in and out of a museum, this Web site demands time to soak it all in--and high bandwidth to get it to you before next year.

  34. Complete Works of William Shakespeare Have you ever wished you could get an exact reference to the play, act, and scene containing any quotation from any of William Shakespeare's works? Just stop by his site and use the handy search feature.
  35. ABOUT LIVING Naming your site "About Living" is an ambitious undertaking. While this hub isn't a cradle-to-grave how-to guide, it does serve as an elegant gathering place for people who want to live a holistic life. That's right, leave your cupcakes in the kitchen; this feel-good spot (part of Vow.com's umbrella organization) tackles such topics as mind and spirit, health and body, and personal growth. Each of the six sections features topic-specific articles, book reviews, and ongoing chats. Visitors can opine on specific subjects, or weave their thoughts into the multipurpose Bulletin Board thread.
  36. EARTHCAM "We never close" reads this fascinating site's tagline; and indeed, it never does. What is "it"? A huge links list of many of the existing Web cam sites available on the Internet. A Web cam is a camera that broadcasts real-time images over the Web. Cam voyeurs anywhere can tune in here and choose from a shot of the Golden Gate Bridge, updated every 3 minutes; a behind-the-scenes live shot of the CNN newsroom, updated every 3 minutes; daily updates of a college student's freezer; and everything�and we do mean everything in between. Well, except the adult variety.
  37. LATE NIGHT WITH CONAN O'BRIEN Few would have predicted when he came on the air that by 1998 Conan O'Brien would qualify as a television success. But here he is, having mellowed a bit and calmed his coif, knocking us dead, night after sleepless night with his offbeat humor. This official new site features Web versions of some of the show's funniest sketches, including "In the Year 2000," "If They Mated," and "Actual Items." Meet the cast and crew, and check to see who'll be on the show in the nights ahead.
  38. ART SERVE MICHIGAN Michelle Shocked sang of being "anchored down in Anchorage." If you're going michigas in Michigan trying to get your art seen, heard, or experienced, this new Web site might be the key to lifting you out of obscurity. Art Serve Michigan, a year-old group of arts advocates, now has an online easel. This clean, colorful, well-designed spot posts info about various grants and scholarships available to artists; descriptions of when and where statewide arts conferences are taking place; and galleries showcasing local artists' work.
  39. YAHOO! MOVIES Yahoo branches out yet again in its bid to be the portal of choice for Web surfers everywhere. The latest site, Yahoo Movies, offers a selection of movie news and reviews, new-release info, related Web events, box-office rankings, and more. If you're into movies but can't take all the plug-ins and other page puffery usually associated with official sites, this one will at least give you the skinny before you dive in.
  40. WebMuseum You may want to start exploring a tiny subset of these collections first. Try the medieval art exhibit. Most artworks are exhibited in the Famous Paintings section. If you are looking for information and work of a specific artist go to "Artist Index" while in the Famous Paintings section.
  41. World Art Treasures This page uses the medium of technology to promote the discovery and love of art. Many links to the worlds most famous art treasures! Scroll down to "World Art Treasures" and choose a subject.
  42. Vatican Museum Let this page come in completely then scroll down to the bottom to access 596 images from the Vatican collection. Also available are links to the Sistine Chapel, Vatican City and more! (Graphics Heavy)

  48. Absolutt Don't worry, this isn't a big vodka ad--at least not in the traditional sense. They also have a warning that you have to be legal drinking age to enter the site. Absolut has rounded up some of the most talented artists around and created a sort of online animation festival. It's wacky, its hip, and its slow... be prepared to wait for some rather huge Shockwave and Quicktime files to download.
  49. ZENtertainmentZENtertainment is a site devoted to music, film, TV, video games, and music. You'll find game downloads, movie clips, links and other goodies on the Web site, but the real meat and potatoes is delivered through a free e-mail newsletter.
  50. Sarcasm Networks Take a break from whatever nonsense you're engaged in and zip over to the Sarcasm Network. Just be sure to wipe that silly smile off your face first. Lots of high-quality Web-centric lampooning that even those of us with a strange sense of humour will find truly enjoyable. (I know that I did :-)
  51. WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association If you think the Cleveland Rockers is the name of that new band on MTV, then you're missing out on the hottest thing to hit the sports world since Tiger Woods: Women's Pro Basketball. This useful site is packed with news, player info, schedules, scores, and stats.
  52. Happy Christmas Site This site looks at the holiday with a bit of humour. This interactive site lets you share your Christmas catastrophes or the most useless gift you've ever received, send an electronic Christmas card, and more.

  54. Hanukkah--Festival of Lights Welcome to ORT's Hanukkah section. Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights, involves the lighting of candles for eight days, commencing on the 25th day of the month of Kislev (November/December), to commemorate the victory of the Jews over the Hellenist Syrians in 165 BCE. Following their victory, the Maccabees, sons of the Priestly Hasmonean family which led the Jews in their revolt against the Syrian overlords, entered the Holy Temple in Jerusalem defiled by the Syrian invaders, cleansed it and dedicated it anew to the service of God.
