Subject-based gateways
A service that is being developed by Iowa State University. Academic-level internet resources are subdivided into a number of subject fields. There are plans to extend the service to a fully fledged one.
The United Kingdom in 1993 created the Electronic Libraries Programme, Within that part of the programme, several 'subject-based gateways' were developed:
- the Electronic Libraries Programme, evolved into the RDN a co-operative network which seeks to enrich learning, research, and cultural engagement by facilitating access to high-quality Internet resources through the development of subject-based gateways for the learning and research communities.

offers an overview of some 35 'subject-based gateways,' among which are the six mentioned above.
