Update to the story below on the NYB Virus. May 21, 1998. NYB won. I cannot remove that virus. In this instance, there is too little memory and power to overcome this Devil. I would have to replace the Hard drive and the memory in order to remove the Virus. I am instead going to get a more up to date Computer. First thing I am going to do is get a Clean Boot up Disk Available and keep it in a Safe place. Lesson Learned! As I have stated in here repeatedly, this place is like the Wild West. Think of youself as a new gun slinger that's innocently walked into town. You come face to face with one of the nastiest, meanest hombres in town and you left your six shooter in the motel room. Trouble is, before you meet and he draws his guns on you, you don't even you who the sucker is or what he looks like, much less where he is hiding with guns drawn and just waiting for you to show your face. I had an updated Norton with me (Norton Anti-Virus), and I use it religously. Anything and everything new to my Beast (Affectionate term for my 200 mghz. Pentium Pro Micron Millienium) is scanned and sometimes rescanned. Then a friends mother turns me on to a 8 mghz Tandy IBM Clone. A 286. Ancient, but it is still working OK. What the heck. I let my teenage son Learn about DOS on it and proceed to down load some games for him to use on the DOS operating system that it houses. Damn mean hombre waiting for me. NYB is his name. 512 bytes long. A runt. A peon. Hell, I have webpages bigger than he is. Don't matter. My web pages are not designed to enter some stange computer and remove the first sector of data on the hard drive and replace it with some garbage I have created. Then move the correct data to the third sector. Then go hide in the memory of this computer. When some unsuspecting disk is inserted in the Floppy drive, I then don't have my webpage jump on that disk and replace the first sector on that disk and move the good data to the seventeenth sector. Then when that disk is inserted into another computer ... you gussed it. It jumps off and infects that computer, or at least tries to. Luckly, Norton was back in gear and caught that stinking Hombre before he could harm another unarmed computer. But, the damage is being done. This poor weak Tandy is fully infected and I don't have a clean Boot up disk to work with. NYB is having a field day and growing stronger. I finally give the fine folks at Dr. Solomons a call and get some technical advice for free on what to do and proceed to follow the Instructions. Unfortuneatly, It is in the late stages of the game and NYB has a good foothold. I can't get a c:\ Prompt or even an A:\ prompt when booting up from a clean boot disk. And this is all with in 24 hours. NYB don't mess around when it gets going. Luckily, it isn't doing physical harm to the Tandy (I don't think and the experts haven't mentioned any harm to be done). I just can't get rid of the damn thing and I am for now leaving the computer on and trying not to reboot. I will eventually kick this sucker butt. When I do, you'll read it first right here. Expert advice on avoiding scamsFamily Circle Magazine November 19,1996 (pg. 106) Granted, this is written for the eldsters in our listening audience, but how many of you are up on these precautions, humm? I thought so.
