Recollections of The Past
Notes for Florian SLADOVNIK
Some old Sladovnik family stories, tell us that... "Florian Sladovnik had told his children that he was really a Frnka, but his parents had died and he was either adopted by or came over with a Sladovnik family, who had mistreated him. One of
the parents had hit him upside his head so hard that it caused him to become near deaf. That was when he left home at sixteen-years-old." It had also been said that... "He came to the states with his dad, and his parents had died here in
Texas." Some of this above was true, but quite mixed-up over time.
Facts: He was born as Florian Sladovnik, son of Rozena Sladovnikova, before her marriage to Florian Frnka. Midwife, Anna Vokasova from house #184, Roznov, helped deliver him, and he was baptized by Josef Arnost, cooperator. His Godparents
were Jozef Zajic, pastureland farmer from Roznov and his wife, Barbora.
He came to the United States as a Frnka, when he was three-years-old, his family was listed as Florian Frnka (24), Veronika " (19), Florian " (3), and Catharine " (11mo.) on the ship, Frankfurt (276 Czechs. on board), from Moravia, Austria to
New Orleans, LA., and arrived on Nov. 15, 1870. Then they took a coastal steamer on to Galveston, TX.
He was listed as one of Florian Frnka's children on the 1880 TX. Soundex, which was taken on June 15th. in Austin Co. All listed on this Soundex were Florian Frnka (34), Veronika (29), Florian (13), Franz (9), Johann (6), Anna (4), and Mary
(2).
He was reared as a Catholic, and went by the name of Florian Frnka, until after he left home in 1883 at the age of sixteen-years-old. From that point on, he went by the name of Florian Sladovnik, living and working on neighboring farms in
Austin Co., TX.
Florian had dark hair, dark eyes, and tanned complexion, was hard of hearing, and was a member of the Woodsman of the World. He died of pneumonia, while living with his daughter, Mrs. Lillie Jezek.
To date (1998), all Sladovnik's in Texas are direct descendants' of Florian & Anna (Marek) Sladovnik of AUSTIN Co., TX., and all Sladovnik's in Nebraska are direct descendants' of Sebastian & Barbara (Johanes) Sladovnik of DODGE Co., NE.
There is only one other Sladovnik family that I have record of and they came to the U.S. on the ship, America, from Bohemia, Austria to NewYork, and arrived on June 9, 1870. This Sladovnik family was Val. (29), Johanne (31), Johanne (3), Baby
(3mo.) and John (69).
The SLADOVNIK name is indeed a rare one, because the most in the world are here in the U.S.A., which statistically number less than 100 households and estimated total U.S. population of 262,530,000 in 1998.
