Recollections of The Past

Notes for Joseph MCCLURE

His family came to Texas from Illinois when he was 4 years old in May 1848, and on Christmas day in 1849, they were one of the first families to settle in what is now Alvarado, Johnson County Texas. In those days they had no wagon roads on
this side of the Red River, and traveled by buffalo trails. There were few white people, but thousands of Indians and wild animals, that were friendly. The Indians loved them more than their own tribe, until the white Eastern Packhorse
Traders ravished their women and madly killed an Indian warrior. Then the Indians began to kill our people, but they never scalped one until an Indian was scalped first by the white man.
As a boy, he had only Indian children for playmates until Jimmy Janes's family arrived in 1853, then he also played with John Ed, Jimmy's son.
In 1861, when Joseph was 17 years old, he used Col. Sam Myers oxen and made his first crop of corn. He sold the crop from the field to Captain Ross, who was on his way to fight the Indians. In this raid, Captain Ross captured Cynthia Ann
Parker, and killed her man, the main Chief.
Joseph and his wife married at Thomas Myers house, and Helen Myers was Losada's Standing mate, while Parson, Josiah Welcher Performed the Wedding (McClure, Joseph "First Days of Alvarado" May 1, 1917).
Joseph McClure was a member of The Pioneers' Association. He and his family moved to Ft.Worth, TX. in 1882. Joseph McClure has also been called the "Grandson of Alvarado" by Historians' and Writers'. He was a good man, and cared deeply about
family, people, and those who came before us. He wrote too many true stories to tell, and had a great memory for detail.
